You might be on to something here................

GM builds sedans in the US, sedan sales tank; GM closes plant(s).

GM builds EV's in the US, EV sales tank (or never take off); GM closes plant.......

    -----------------------------------------

    From the story:

“We haven’t released the specific date yet,” Barra said. “There will be a lot more to follow on the specifics of the product............"

GM had originally intended to build the new vehicle outside the U.S. The automaker said it moved production back because the new vehicle will be based on an advanced version of the platform used in the current Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle, which the Orion plant currently builds.

This must be that mystery small-vehicle that was slated for Oshawa..... which is "outside the US".

If it weren't for trucks and some SUV's, GM would be one foot in the grave and the other a slippin'

Just ran into a thing that says 8 of 10 millennials drive sedans, yes sedans:

    https://www.carscoops.com/2019/03/st...ucks-and-suvs/

FCA is gone. Ford is almost there. Chevy has Spark/Sonic/Malibu. Not many sedans/hatches compared to Toyota/Honda/Hyundai/Kia. I'm just hoping Orion continues to spit out some Sonics while they do their EVs. A good Sonic update in 2020 and I'm ready to trade in my 2015.

What I really want is a CT6V, but hey that's not gonna happen!

Of course they do. In our office they all drive Civics, Elantras and other small cars.

GM just killed off their primary entry level car. As for EVs... Sales in Ontario recently dropped 80% when the incentives were cancelled.

Maybe I am missing something but it seems like insanity.

Ed that’s crazy talk! Don’t you realize they would have to spend a billion or so designing a new vehicle, then set up a factory in, I don’t know, Lordstown, but build the hatchback in Mexico, then add a new Diesel engine years later??

But seriously I wonder if this is all part of a very aggressive negotiation with the UAW and that after September we might see some announcements of plants reopening—OK maybe not all of them but one or two—with maybe the Cruze coming back in some form. New contract etc.

Can't see it. GM still wants to shed more jobs.

GM knows there is far more efficiency that can realized.

I hope not.
If GMmismanagement had a brain, they'd hire a couple of ex-military or others who are familiar with strategy and tactics. Because obviously GM brass are not. You could about write a textbook on what NOT to do, taking page after page out of the GM Management Handbook.

First thing I'd do is appoint a Commo Chief, ALL comments verbal or written would go through that person. Because too many of the brass, including Mary, should not be out in public making inane comments. They need adult supervision. Like the Boy Scouts have.

Of course they do. People without a lot of money, like millennials, drive sedans because they're more affordable. These people aren't going to suddenly have several thousand more dollars to purchase a GM CUV/SUV just because they don't sell small cars anymore.

99% sure you're right. But what if with the right contract you could run Lordstown profitably at a lower volume? Do they need more Equinox volume, isn't the Cruze built on the same platform? According to The Other GM website, it's the same platform as Equinox, Envision, Terrain, and Cascada. What about some Envision production at Lordstown (let the Chinese factory build for Chinese market) along with the Cruze?

    Just spitballing here...
