GM Korea May Close Down Its Manufacturing Presence in Korea

GM Korea May Close Down Its Manufacturing Presence in Korea

There are rumors that GM Korea will withdraw from the domestic market once again. According to local media reports on April 24, rumors that GM Korea will leave the country have emerged as the company posted 530 billion won (US$469.9 million) in operating loss last year and recently announced a voluntary retirement program for its employees.
GM Korea is receiving applications for voluntary retirement from its office workers from the 3rd. This is the fifth voluntary retirement program for its office workers since 2009.
There were also rumors that GM Korea will close down the Gunsan plant as the company switched the production line of the Chevrolet Cruze, which has recently released full-changed models, to the Bupyeong plant after the discontinuation of the Orlando.

Exports of GM Korea’s fully built cars decreased from 620,000 units in 2013 to 410,000 units last year. This was because the Chevrolet brand withdrew from the European and Russian markets since 2013.

Wow, where is GM going to do business? And all of it's car's origins would be gone. Other than Alpha and Vette (is it still a Y body?)

    Maybe simpler yet.

They made 12 BILLION dollars in North America, 100% or so union.

They lost a bunch of money everywhere they have retreated from.

They are not General Custer Motors.

Re: GM Korea May Close Down Its Manufacturing Presence in Korea

GM pulled Chevrolet out of Europe so it can focus on Opel/Vauxhall which they eventually sold to PSA.
Losing Europe meant GM Korea lost a chunk of its export volume. All for nothing? Poorly managed?

All GM's current FWD platforms were either developed by Opel in Germany or GM Korea.

In other news GM closed one of its plants in India as part of its restructuring/downsizing.

GM's problem is pressure from Wall Street and no governance structure to protect it like Ford. GM is also not a defense company, so the Feds do not intervene when undue pressure to artificially boost value is applied.

If GM needs to close down its Korean manufacturing facilities, I wonder if they will keep its development center there.

PS: What exactly will the role of Holden be when its plant shutsdown in October, what happens to its other departments like styling or engineering?

GM profits has been super for a long time. so why would you make such a dumb statement? Ford's profit's fell over 30% while GM's profit went over 30% the last quarter. Isn't profit the bottom line?

There are a couple of token positions available as far as styling and engineering but its very small

There have a been a couple of puff pieces in the media about the lang lang test track remaining open for emissions calibration testing and the like but really it's just being used for the sake of it at the moment

The reality is they cant find a buyer for the facility

Is GM's higher Q1 profits independent of the sale of its European arm to PSA for $2.2 billion?

If GM Korea ends up in the same position as Holden (design & engineering, no manufacturing), I guess one of them will eventually have to go.
