GM is halting production at a 78-year-old Detroit-area plant this week

New York (CNN Business)General Motors' 78-year-old transmission plant in Warren, Michigan is halting production this week.

The Detroit-area plant is one of five in North America that GM last year announced would suspend operations as part of the company's business transformation. GM plans to build fewer sedans as customers demand more trucks and SUVs. It also wants to reshape is business to eventually build more electric cars, while saving $6 billion annually starting at the end of 2019.

Why wasn't GM's new 10 speed transmission put in Warren? Why is FCA investing in Detroit and GM doesn't?

Because GM Powertrain has more than enough production capacity for the 10R transmission at its Romulus and Toledo plants.

Higher capacity plants mean fewer plants and lower costs.

GM still has excess capacity even with all the closures. Of course market share is also down as they shut down a lot of car production.

    +1
GM did the right thing to "unallocate" Warren Transmission. If anything, additional GM Powertrain plants (engine/transmission) need to be shut down in the next few years, given the company's excess production capacity.

That's beside the point of it all. Zero Zero Zero, They're going for Zero emissions , Zero market share, and Zero jobs.

Are you referring to GM? As 1958carnut indicated, that's not the direction GM is going.

I look at cars like the new Hyundai Kona and wonder why GM left the small car market and didn't make a crossover like car model to replace it?

If you can't compete with Civic and Corolla, do something else that would still appeal to entry level buyers. Clearly market share is not even on the agenda right now.

Correct. GM's focus is on profitability, not increased market share. The company's 2Q 2019 earnings released today validates this.
