Oshawa, Ontario – General Motors is adding 600 jobs on a third shift at its plant in Oshawa, Ontario to meet demand for the Chevrolet Equinox.
The third shift marks the final stage of the previously-announced capacity increases for the Equinox and its sister vehicle GMC Terrain. A portion of the new shift will overlap the preceding shift for the next two weeks, ensuring that best practices are passed on during the third shift ramp-up.
“In one-third of the time it would normally take, our teams at Oshawa and CAMI have quickly implemented innovative solutions to satisfy incredible customer demand for these popular vehicles,” said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of General Motors of Canada. “The successful implementation of these unique capacity increases reflects the new agility and customer focus that drives every business decision we make.”
GM said that Equinox sales have increased over 72 per cent in Canada and over 77 per cent of the U.S. The Equinox is built only in Ontario and more than 85 per cent of production is exported.
It does take time to get production of a totally unrelated vehicle (Equinox) production ready in a plant that builds Impalas. It was an aggressive timeline and nothing like this has ever been done in such a short time. This week was SORP with all three shifts.
My father in law is at Cami running 3 shifts where they have been for a year...and last i read, final assembley of Terrain only will go to Oshawa to releive some pressure at Cami (equinox only)...
Either I missed something,
or
The article talks an awful lot about production increases because of equinox demand, but, doesnt sepcifically talk about terrain moving to oshawa to help cami build more equinoxs....which i think is weird journalsism (talking about the 'space' between objects rather than the objects themselves...
Equinox only to Oshawa, west side of body shop dedicated to Equinox, allowing increase in production of Terrain bodies on east side of body shop. The entire body shop at Cami is now capable of 1500 + bodies per day.
Good news. I'll take whatever good news I can get and be happy about it.
