Acting on its goal of winning by scoring all zeroes General Motors Corp. today unveiled a new electronic platform that will be the underpinnings for its next generation of vehicles.

GM CEO Mary Barra has said the company’s vision of the future is one with “zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion” and is being manifested by the company’s focus on developing electric and autonomous vehicles internally and through partnerships.

This new platform is another step towards turning that vision into reality, said GM President Mark Reuss.

“The critical role of software and its importance to our vehicles, both now and for years to come, cannot be overstated,” said Reuss in a written statement. “Our new digital vehicle platform and its eventual successors will underpin all our future innovations across a wide range of technological advancements, including EVs and expanded automated driving.”

Specifically, the platform powers an electronic system capable of managing up to 4.5 terabytes of data processing power per hour--a fivefold increase over GM’s current electronic architecture, the company said.

I was confused at first, I thought this was discussing architecture for a battery powered vehicle, but it is about the architecture for the electronics. Interesting regarding how much processing power it has! Hopefully they have all of the bugs worked out as it could doom the CT5.

A source speaking to Jalopnik, also on condition of anonymity, elaborated on the issue further, claiming GM began developing the mid-engine sports car with a wiring harness and electrical system found across GM’s current lineup, only to determine that it needed to swap it out for a newer, more capable electrical system deep into the development process.

After reading the article it's good to know GM realizes it needs to upgrade these systems if they're heading off in the direction they intend on going with autonomy, supercruise and the like.

That's really fascinating, probably the story I would have lead with when debuting the CT5.

Interesting for you, but what about the "average Joe"? Performance, Economy, Price and a useable back-seat & trunk are a lot more important, no?

That driving footage of the CT5 was underwhelming. That car looked so generic on that winding road but I digress...

I really hope the kinks are ironed out. The government is going to be able to hear you think in your car in the future! People think their convos are being spied on now! Loll Why do you need a car that handles 4.5 TERABYTES! of data an hour or an ethernet connection with 10Gbps? I mean it's totally cool but it kinda freaks me out!

Nonetheless, kudos GM. This is TOTALLY the electrical architecture that postponed the C8. Has to be!

Just don't put any stupid non-automotive grade giant touchscreens in your cars.

That one is about the dumbest ass thing I have ever heard of.
Hey, here's a great idea... let's totally control everything with a unit that can't get hot in the interior of a vehicle!

Tesla started this train and now everyone wants to hop on board after criticizing it. My question, what is GM going to update other than the radio and maps? Change the mapping on the ECU? Dealers will be mad, since that was the whole purpose of updates for you to go to them. Even if it was free, it was foot traffic.

Re: General Motors Unveils All-New Electronic Platform

Some might question why this is slow vs. say Tesla.

GM uses components designed and designated as hardened for automotive use. Tesla doesn't necessarily do this.

For those that don't understand what automotive hardened means. Many electronic components used in computers or mobile devices are designed for indoor or temporary outdoor use. Often for temperature ranges from -20C to 85C. This is not sufficient for automotive use. Example many electrolytic capacitors freeze up below -30C and can become damaged at very low temperatures. So different components need to be used to handle the more extreme environments. This will also include vibration, condensation, higher corrosive environments as well. To add many electronics are also not designed to last the product life cycle that a typical car needs to meet. Typically cars are designed to last at least 10 years. And this is much longer than typical consumer electronics. So automotive hardened means it will handle the appropriate extreme environments and meet the product life cycle goals of a car.
