Detroit-Hamtramck to be GM’s First Assembly Plant 100% Devoted to EVs

Detroit-Hamtramck to be GM’s First Assembly Plant 100 Percent Devoted to Electric Vehicles
    General Motors
    January 27, 2020

$2.2 billion investment will support 2,200 good-paying manufacturing jobs

DETROIT — General Motors’ (NYSE: GM) vision of an all-electric future is coming into clearer focus and gaining momentum with a $2.2 billion investment at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant to produce a variety of all-electric trucks and SUVs. GM’s first all-electric truck will be a pickup with production scheduled to begin in late 2021. This will be followed soon after by the Cruise Origin, a shared, electric, self-driving vehicle unveiled by Cruise in San Francisco last week. Detroit-Hamtramck will be GM’s first fully-dedicated electric vehicle assembly plant.

“Through this investment, GM is taking a big step forward in making our vision of an all-electric future a reality,” said Mark Reuss, GM president, during a press event at the plant with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and other local and state officials. “Our electric pickup will be the first of multiple electric truck variants we will build at Detroit-Hamtramck over the next few years.”

When the plant is fully operational, this investment will create more than 2,200 good-paying U.S. manufacturing jobs.

GM will also invest an additional $800 million in supplier tooling and other projects related to the launch of the new electric trucks.

Since the fall of 2018, GM has committed to invest more than $2.5 billion in Michigan to bring electric vehicles to market through investments at Orion assembly, GM battery lab in Warren, Brownstown and today’s announced direct investment in Detroit-Hamtramck.

The plant’s paint and body shops and general assembly area will receive comprehensive upgrades, including new machines, conveyors, controls and tooling.

GM’s joint venture with LG Chem – which is investing $2.3 billion to manufacture battery cells in Lordstown, Ohio – will supply battery cells for the electric vehicles manufactured at Detroit-Hamtramck.

A key driver behind GM’s decision to make the commitment to Detroit-Hamtramck was the support this project received from the state of Michigan.

“The support from the state of Michigan was a key element in making this investment possible,” added Reuss. “This investment helps ensure that Michigan will remain at the epicenter of the global automotive industry as we continue our journey to an electrified future.”

Detroit-Hamtramck currently operates on one shift of production and builds the Cadillac CT6 and the Chevrolet Impala. Approximately 900 people are employed at the plant. As previously confirmed, the plant will be idled for several months beginning at the end of February as the renovations begin.

The plant has built more than 4 million vehicles since opening in 1985. Hourly employees at Detroit-Hamtramck are represented by UAW Local 22.

I assume this will be the Hummer.

This is the beginning of GM's make it or break it, I hope their very high risk gamble pays off, otherwise they will be so far behind on other fronts (meaning if they misread the market and hybrids are where the action is at) that they will be toast. Though I suspect if battery vehicles are a miss there will be a huge shift towards the Japanese makes with the Western (American and Euro) makes crashing and burning.

Anyone find it odd that the first EV that they're going to announce out of this conversion is a freaking Truck? No Crossover, no Sedans....a truck. #NoMoBailouts

I do too. But who knows what other progress is there in these other segments because this is what they're hyping. I also think like BlackGTP thinks and what if... and then they're scrambling to get it together some where else or in some other, other way. Trucks and big SUV's are/is where the bucks are but not where the masses are.

Its going to be some serious tough sledding if they dont pull a rabbit out of their asses and beat Rivian/Ford to market with their trucks. The R1S and R1T are probably going to have a 12 month head start on anything thatll come from D'ham. These "startups" are not to be taken lightly.

I can see it now - the plant and sales are successful, then the corrupt UAW stages another strike and shuts down production and alienates more GM customers (and potential customers).

The VSS platform (Encore GX, Trailblazer) was EV ready. Why wasn't a VSS EV SUV come out of Lordstown rather then selling the plant to Workhorse. Doesn't make sense that if the LG battery plant is going into Lordstown, you'd be able to shuffle the batteries down the road. I see ICE impala's and caddies built in D-Ham for a few more years.

Shoving hybrids over the cliff is IMO as irrational as it gets.

Trucks are Where It's At, image-wise, IMO. Manly-man, macho, military-looking. It wouldn't surprise me if someone came out with a fake M-60 or M-50 or gatt rooftop accessory. Except, of course, such a look would cause the Snowflake Brigade to their draws.

Yeah, UAW is certainly a potential destroyer here. Above and beyond putting all your eggs in one basket. Well, two. Electric. And Trucks and Utes. What could possibly go wrong?

It would be interesting to see who'll encourage the UAW to stage another strike who'll alienate more GM customers and the suspects are not Professor Plum or Colonel Mustard.

Then Barra try to found another product to keep Hamtramck plant open so they would told "we didn't destroyed Poletown for nothing".

I think this is GM's way of ensuring success. Take another factory, build an EV platform, then place a truck chassis on top of it. If it works, then GM will continue its investment. If it doesn't, it still has Arlington and the other factories to continue to pump out their US made high margin vehicles. The key to GM is to convince the US market who purchases these ICE-based high margin vehicles to switch. If they can't do that, then I think GM will reset once again.
