AP Sources: Detroit Automakers to Shut Down Factories

Two people briefed on the matter say Detroit's three automakers have agreed to close all of their factories due to worker fears about the coronavirus.

Detroit (AP) — Detroit's three automakers have agreed to close all of their factories due to worker fears about the coronavirus, two people briefed on the matter said Wednesday.

Automakers are expected to release details of the closure later in the day. The United Auto Workers union has been pushing for factories to close because workers are fearful of coming into contact with the virus.

The people didn't want to be identified because the closures have not been formally announced.

The decision reverses a deal worked out late Tuesday in which the automakers would cancel some shifts so they could thoroughly cleanse equipment and buildings, but keep factories open. But workers, especially at some Fiat Chrysler factories, were still fearful and were pressuring the union to seek full closures.

Fiat Chrysler temporarily closed a factory in Sterling Heights, Michigan, north of Detroit after workers were concerned about the virus. The company said a plant worker tested positive for the coronavirus but had not been to work in over a week. One shift was sent home Tuesday night and the plant was cleaned. But that apparently didn't satisfy workers, and two more shifts were canceled on Wednesday.

Detroit 3 agree to close U.S. factories amid coronavirus fears

DETROIT -- The Detroit 3 automakers have agreed to shut down their U.S. manufacturing facilities due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, according to a person with knowledge of their discussions.
It was not immediately clear when the shutdown would take effect or for how long. UAW President Rory Gamble had previously called for a preemptive two-week closure.
Ford Motor Co., General Motors and Fiat Chrysler had previously agreed to enhanced safety measures at its facilities, but the extraordinary move to temporarily suspend all production followed continued pressure from the UAW and a similar move by Honda Motor Co. to shutter its nonunionized U.S. plants for six production days.
Ford said that all its manufacturing sites in the U.S., Mexico and Canada would close through March 30 after Thursday’s evening shifts.
“We’re continuing to work closely with union leaders, especially the United Auto Workers, to find ways to help keep our workforce healthy and safe – even as we look at solutions for continuing to provide the vehicles customers really want and need,” Kumar Galhotra, Ford’s president of North America, said in a statement. “In these unprecedented times, we’re exploring unique and creative solutions to support our workforce, customers, dealers, suppliers and communities.”

Ford said it would work with the UAW on plans to restart production.

“Today’s action is the prudent thing to do. By taking a shutdown and working through next steps, we protect UAW members, their families and the community,” Rory Gamble, president of the UAW, said in a statement. “We have time to review best practices when the plants reopen, and we prevent the possible spread of this pandemic. We commend Ford for working with us and taking this bold step.”

Makes sense the factory workers want to close down so that they can try to avoid getting the Coronavirus.

I'd think the manufacturers would want to as well, this coronavirus has got to be impacting sales.

It's going to snowball into that. I get the fear among the workers and can't blame them really. Even straight, non-sensationalized news is scary. And this thing does seem very deadly to older people.

Hopefully we'll all be laughing about an overreaction by summer.

Hopefully a vaccination can be quickly developed and distributed. My understanding is that some are already being tested. The person/team/company that first gets something to market should get worldwide accolades. The sad thing is they will not, instead, accolades are reserved for people who can hit a ball really far by hitting it with a stick (baseball), or someone that is really good looking and can sing or act. We need more Einstein's as hero's and less Hollywood.

Maybe the corrupt (former) UAW officials that embezzled millions of UAW funds will quickly pay it back, so it can be distributed to the out-of-work UAW members?

While it would be fantastic if the trial of the vaccine currently being tested works, it still takes about a year to mass produce a vaccine. One of the reasons the flu shot is so hit or miss is they have to guess which strains are going to be out in the future to be vaccinated against. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes less so. Here is just one link detailing the process. Just the testing will take months. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/16/firs...in-the-us.html

It’s ok to actually read the information from the CDC. Washington Post had an excellent article as we just reached the 100 death in the country, (yeah more people died in car wrecks last week). So far, almost no healthy people have died. No one under 10 has died in the world. If you are over 70 or have bad health, immune, heart, respiratory, diabetes yes take every precaution. 81% of the people who tested positive had mild to no symptoms. It’s likely that there 3-8 times more people that have been afflicted that have never been tested, (no symptoms or no test kits) meaning that 90+% of all people will shrug it off like a mild flu. Yeah we should close the country, kill the economy and create 20% unemployment for a disease that is not anymore virulent than influenza. The known numbers do not support the BS we have been feed about a pandemic. Read more than the headlines!

It's still a bit of a scary unknown situation, but I do believe and agree the media hype and overreaction is BS used to try to bring about another agenda at least here in the US.

Uh huh. covid19 is has a 10x mortality rate vs regular flu. Dr Sanjay Gupta estimates that 40-60% of Americans will get it and there's around 1% mortality rate. You do the math.

Latest expert advise here is the transmission rate of COVID19 is 2 to 3 times higher compared to regular flu, and the 'case fatality rate' is 30x more than regular flu (0.1% vs ~3%)

A vaccine could be up to 18 months away..

Hopefully we do better than Italy. This source (https://www.worldometers.info/corona...country/italy/) shows 20% of the GP's in Bergamo have been infected with several dying. Worse for the known outcomes of Italy as a whole, roughly 50% die, with 28 thousand still active cases.
