Sounds like kind of a negative situation. Where are the county search and rescue people ? Was there a mechanical problem with the motorcycle or what?

I haven't read anything today, but from what I read yesterday, it sounded like he just stopped to rest for a bit and went in the water, and seemingly got swept away in current.

    That's too bad.

Honestly, it sounds like this guy might have ghosted himself. Who leaves a laptop by a stream? And the water where he was would be freezing right now. Who would get in on purpose unless they were trying to do themselves in? And if that were my goal I can think of a lot less traumatic ways than drowning in frigid, rushing water with mountains nearby and a 1000cc bike underneath. Just a thought.

I guess they don't suspect foul play:

    https://www.autoblog.com/2019/06/13/...writer-update/

The search for a prominent automotive journalist missing since last week in Northern California's gold country has focused on a river where his motorcycle, clothing and other belongings turned up, but no foul play is suspected, authorities said on Thursday.

David Gordon Johnson, 43, disappeared while on his way home to the Sacramento area from a long-distance motorcycle ride that friends said was meant as a test drive for a magazine article he planned to write.

The motorcycle was found parked at a boat launch along Mokelumne River in rural Calaveras County, about 60 miles southeast of Sacramento, where he presumably had stopped to rest, the county sheriff's office said in a statement.

The key was left in the ignition, with his helmet and gloves on the seat.

Johnson was reported missing by his girlfriend, and a search began on June 7, according to the statement.

The effort was expanded the next day to include boats, ground teams, a police helicopter and drones combing the riverbanks for several miles along both sides of the swift-flowing Mokelumne, it added.

Some of Johnson's clothing and personal items, including his cell phone, laptop, and two jackets were later located by ground searchers, and a tracking dog followed an apparent scent trail to the water's edge.

On June 9, the search was widened with additional scent-tracking dogs, with more of Johnson's clothes found at the spot where he was believed to have taken a "selfie" photograph sent to a friend days earlier. A new scent trail picked up by dogs again led to the river, the sheriff's office said.

"With all evidence pointing towards Mr. Johnson having gone into the Mokelumne River for unknown reasons, and with no evidence of foul play, search efforts have continued in the subsequent days along the river's edge," it said.

The search will continue for the rest of the week, it said.

Media outlets have said Johnson's last known communication was a June 5 text message to his girlfriend, Jaclyn Trop, who was quoted telling the automotive magazine Car and Driver, "I just hope he's figured out how to stay alive."

Thanks for the update. And I guess it all depends on what your definition of "foul play" is, to paraphrase one of my many heroes. My suspects, in no particular order:

    Fatigue-clouded judgement.
    Alcohol.
    Marry-hoochie (aka pot).
    Other recreational drugs.
Damn poor judgement concerning overestimation of his abilities or underestimation of how cold and swift the crik was, or underestimation of those hazards.

    UFO abduction.

Sad. Sounds like he entered the water with the purpose of not coming out again. Very sad.

Looks like it. And entering water such as that would ensure a quick end.

Sad end. I know it's always been a shock to me when I learned of friends or acquaintances who killed themselves.

When I first heard one of the shrinks I worked with say "Suicide is a very selfish act," I was shocked. It's a lot of things, depression or agony fueling many of them from what I know.

But it's also very selfish, I agree with the doc. It's a permanent solution, no replays if you have an "oops!" moment at the last second. The waves spread far.

That he just committed to marrying a woman and then a month or two later apparently offs himself, that has to put her into shock and a long period of questioning herself.

Hopefully he's found peace on The Other Side..

I'm not sure he committed suicide. Could have just been washed away in the current.

I'm not either, that's what his friend suspects. No sane sober person jumps into fast-flowing ice-melt streams.

Re: Car and Driver Writer Goes Missing

Someone who's alone way out somewhere needs to be pretty much in touch with themself and screwed together. I'm thinking this guy had some gremlins and some unresolved issues and that being alone out in the sticks allowed those gremlins to overwhelm him. This was purposeful. It wasn't an accident. And, yes, it was ultimately selfish.

Kinda how I saw it too. Sometimes we can be our own worst enemies and when tied to ill advised or intentional acts, that's all she wrote.
