CAMI gets temp layoffs and Mexico looses a shift as Equinox sales slow

    https://globalnews.ca/news/5713791/t...ft-cut-mexico/

Looks like sales are drying up on Chevy's top selling small SUV With all the bad press of GM being the number one car maker in Mexico, looks like Mexico had to take the hit and loose a whole production shift. Easy when you don't have a union to fight with. An Equinox refresh better be in the works or CAMI might be next.

They've been saying it for three years now. Every one is expecting a market correction soon. When it finally happens then they'll say, ohhhh, see, I called it so you better listen to me.

Layoffs are happening all over the place, not just this industry. There's usually this kind of thing around election time due to uncertainty of policy change, so not necessarily a recession looming.

AFAIK, all of the facilities worldwide that assemble Chevrolet Equinox (CAMI, Ramos Arizpe, San Luis Potosí, Rosario, and SAIC Wuhan) have a unionized workforce.

It certainly is causing economic harm, though not at "killing the economy" levels yet. In the U.S., BEA reported slowing growth in 2Q 2019. If the current presidential administration does not lift tariffs ASAP, Congress should step in, reclaim its authority over tariffs, and do so.

To GM's credit, the company seems to more proactive in cutting production when vehicle inventories grow way past the 60 days supply considered optimum. That may be what's going on with Chevrolet Equinox.

CAMI and Korea have unions. Not in Mexico if they're paying $5/hr. Equinox also made in China, I Know there ain't no union there other then the People's Party!

Chevy Equinox is not assembled at any plants in South Korea as of August 2019.

CAMI union representation is through Unifor.

Ramos Arizpe and San Luis Potosí employees are represented by labor unions affiliated with Confederación de Trabajadores Mexicanos (CTM).

SAIC Wuhan's production workforce is represented by unions connected to the legally mandated All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU)

Rosario plant workers belong to Sindicato de Mecanicos y Afines del Transporte Automotor de la República Argentina (SMATA).

This comes as no surprise! Yesterday I was behind a beige Equinox and he was all over the road. Across the line, off the road line, it's not easy to aim when there's important information coming in from your BFF!! OMG!!! LOL!!!

So I can see why poor driving would slow down production.

I'd make it slow down a hell of a lot more.
IMO, this 10% tariff is weak. Businesses are just going to eat some of it and pass along the rest to us.
The goal should be to make businesses that make products manufactured for export to the U.S. leave China.

I'd put a punitive tarriff on 100% of everything that comes here.
I don't have a problem with 50%. Whatever it takes.

I'm not foolish enough to think these jobs are coming here, but some will.
Otherwise, they're going to go to other cheap place. What's the best cheap place they could go?
Mexico! Incentivize the movement of manufacturing from Asia to North America.

We make a deal... no tariffs on Mexican product, but they have to have a certain amount of domestic content.
Chinese stuff doesn't have squat for domestic content, so at least our people get a piece of this action.
A Mexican that has a job doesn't come here.
Plus there's no JV's... U.S. companies make profits north and south of the border.

I work for a Canadian trucking firm that ships pork and other "cold chain" products across north America AND exports TO CHINA
the "CAN" division to CHINA is EXPANDING and the to pharr Texas (gateway to Mexico) is holding its own volume wise

Pork TO the USA is all but gone
"cold chain" required products OUT OF THE USA to Canada is UP a bit

You are exactly right AAFAIC, because Gov't over-regulation and other such things as a certain entity that most of them have as an aside to the workforce that also as stated above in another post all work together and chases manufacturers out for increased profit margins any way they can get them.

I still think the Terrain is totally ugly and the Equinox was not a great re-design. GM is capable of MUCH better.

I'm sure the new RAV4 built just down the highway will trounce Equinox sales.
