GMI Mentioned in Detroit News Article

    http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosins...A01-283759.htm

The article has to do with Japanese horsepower ratings being significantly lower for '06 in some cases. The comparison between a 235 hp Sonata and a 190 hp Camry is good for a chuckle. Meanwhile, Detroit's ratings seem to have held steady, or increased.
The changes are already having an impact among die-hards who prowl Internet chat rooms like AutoWeek's Combustion Chamber, Edmunds Town Hall and GM Insidenews. In a recent posting on AutoWeek's site under the heading, "Acura hurt by new SAE hp standard -- numbers were inflated," one chatter said: "Bottom line is if you sell me a car with the promise of say 300 hp, I want my 300 hp!"

This is horrible reporting in Plungis's article. A couple of the vehicles he bases his article on were in preproduction form when preliminary HP estimates were released.

The article is a mute point, any time the measuring stick is changed, measurement will change. Performance has not changed.

There is a difference between changing a standard vs. mis-representing figures as is the case I believe with Hyundai a few years ago and the Mustang Cobra.

I've always supsected that the Northstar might be overrated.
Seems to me that the 215hp Shortstar powered Aurora was only about .5 second slower than the Northstar powered Aurora.
And the Northstar car had a 3.71 gear while Shorstar car had a 3.29.

The DTS HP ratings are a big mess. For a long time, the high output Northstar in the old DTS/STS had 300HP. Then in 2005, the high output Northstar became Northstar NHP and was suddenly rated at 290HP. I have no idea whether any changes were made... the only relevant thing I can dig out of GM Powertrain's web site is this:
"GM Powertrain's success in commonizing engines has continued to improve. For example, one challenge faced by GM Powertrain in 2004 was the fitment of the DeVille's LD8-code Northstar for the 2004 Bonneville GXP. In this case, not only the battery cable changed, but several brackets and hoses needed to be redesigned. While the GXP and the DeVille could have continued with multiple variations on the brackets and hoses, those developed for the GXP have been retrofitted to 2005 Deville applications, eliminating what were essentially redundant parts that served the same purposes."
Did swapping brackets/hoses really kill 10HP? Hard to believe...

So, it's hard to say whether they actually did something that got it down 10HP, or if it was a marketing move to make the VVT Northstar look better.

I think in the 2006 DTS it's now rated at 291HP with the new procedure.. so the new procedure didn't hurt the DTS. The Lucerne, though, appears to have lost 7 HP...
