Sometimes people misinterpret posts, and a smiley can indicate someone is joking, being friendly, etc. I like 'em!

It would actually be something that may be pretty simple to prevent - I think there is already a restriction on posting less than a certain number of characters, so perhaps increasing that restiction (because the ": lmao :" smiley (without the extra spaces) probably counts as 6 characters to the software when it checks whether the post is long enough. So maybe increase the minimum to 20 characters or something like that (assuming that it doesn't count quoted text as part of the number of characters in a post).

Then are you really adding something to the conversation, or just fluffing your post count? I'm not saying that in an accusatory way, but if you're writing less than 20 characters, how can you actually contribute meaningfully to a discussion? The only exception that I could think of is if someone has an error and you're correcting it (for example, referring to a Ford Excursion when they meant to say Expedition, a post that said "You mean the Expedition" would be reasonable (and by the way, that example was 23 characters).

    Re: Duplicate threads

    How do you define "duplicate"??
7 different threads for 7 different articles on the same topic. That happens all the time (just look at Industry News). Are those not duplicates?

JoeT (bless his cotton socks) submits most stories into one thread (at the start where possible) for Holden news, so you can read all the articles and then the comments. May be more difficult when you are getting 200 hits per thread though.
