Will Power Wins Race 2 Of 2016 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix

Prior to today’s race many had wondered whether Will Power would be able to shake off the recent struggles that he has faced this season. A penalty during morning qualifying wiped out his two best lap times, and put the talented Australian in eighth place on the grid.

However, he was able to put all that behind him, and use his No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet to piece together a solid performance that ultimately gave him the win (his 26th victory) at Belle Isle, while also allowing Team Penske and Chevrolet to take the 1-2 spots on the podium.

Simon Pagenaud still retains his lead in the overall championship standings despite his second place finish in the No. 22 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Chevrolet.

Today’s race was much more physical than yesterday’s dual with the track walls proving to be an unwelcome surprise for many drivers. This was highlighted in grand fashion at the green flag when a chain reaction crash soured the day for several drivers.

One of these individuals was James Hinchcliffe and the No. 5 Arrow Schmidt Peterson Honda who was driven straight into the wall by Carlos Munoz during the accident. As reported earlier on GMI Hinchcliffe initially went on a tirade against Munoz in an interview with ESPN calling him “an idiot” and claiming that he would send Munoz the bill for his damaged car. Later he retracted these remarks, and issued an apology via Twitter after having the chance to see footage of what happened.

Max Chilton was also forced to retire due to the damage done to his No. 8 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet.

Yesterday’s winner Sebastian Bourdais tried to repeat the strategy oriented gameplan that helped him succeed in Race 1, and it seemed that for alittle while, it would succeed once again when he gained the lead during the caution period. But the front four cars (including Bourdais) were forced to make late stops for fuel in the closing laps of the race which gave Power the lead and ultimately the victory in today’s race.
