Watch: The ZL1 and the ZR1 Go Head to Head

Chevrolet is obsessed with the letter Z. Many of its best performance models start with the 26th letter of our alphabet. Case in point: the Corvette ZR1 and the Camaro ZL1… 1LE.

Both are capable of ripping holes in the space-time continuum with their big V8s and comparably big wheels, but which is faster around a track?

Sport Auto sought to find out:

After the requisite showing off (admiring the better angles of the car and its sounds) the driver takes these cars for a hot lap of the Hockenheimring’s Kurzanbindung (or short track), which is in Germany if you hadn’t already guessed.

The result is a 1:09.60 for the Camaro and an impressively anagrammatic 106.90 for the Corvette.

So all is right with the world and the natural order stands, but that remains a very impressive time for the Camaro, which has two more seats and 100 fewer horses to play with.

That puts the ZR1 just a bit behind the Porsche 918 Spyder and the Camaro right up there with a 911 Turbo.

Intriguingly, the ZR1 managed the exact same time as the Z06 with the same driver (Christian Gebhardt) behind the wheel, so it could be that the short track isn’t the best showcase for the car’s enormous power.
