Watch: Shutting Down our Town, A Tribute to the End of Holden by Evan Williams March 9, 2020 Share Comments When General Motors announced it would be shuttering the Holden brand next year, it marked the end of an era for Australians. It may not have been on the level of the Michigan closures of the 1980s, since production at the Elizabeth, South Australia plant had shuttered three years earlier, but it was still a blow to fans of the brand. Imagine Chevrolet as a brand ending here and you get the idea. It’s earned some strong reactions from supporters of the brand, including songs to mourn the factory closures. It’s also inspired this YouTube video that sums up the company’s history from saddlemaker to the last models to roll off of the end of the assembly line. If you want a reminder of Holden, including some classic advertising campaigns (football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars!), reactions from Holden employees and fans, and then a music video for Australian rock singer Jimmy Barnes’ song about the shuttering of the Elizabeth factory.
