11 Rare Photos of Old Camaro Prototypes

The Camaro has been an American icon for 50 years…

Over the years and behind the scenes General Motors has toyed with different design philosophies and body styles, many of which never got beyond the concept stage. For example, the original design study for the second-gen car displays a heavy European influence, borrowing significantly from the 1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso.

It would appear GM was heavily considering a Kamm Back version of the second-gen Camaro as evidenced by the evolution of the second-gen prototype in shooting break form.

There are a few other interesting looks, like the third-gen design study which stayed fairly close to the mark, or the ’80s Camaro FWD styling concepts which laid the ground work for the fourth-gen’s styling while exploring the idea of switching both the Camaro and Firebird to front-wheel drivers.

Lastly, check out the 1967 Chevrolet XP-837, dubbed Mini Camaro, the program would go on to eventually birth the Chevrolet Vega.
