According to the Nurburgring GSi is Better Than OPC…

Slotted to debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, Opel is offering up an advanced look at the new Insignia GSi on the same day Buick decided to show off the new Regal GS. 

The simulcast debuts from Buick and Opel isn’t coincidental; like their pedestrian donors, the Regal GS and Insignia GSi are uncannily identical yet remarkably individual despite their co-dependent existence.

Grand Sport Injection was the moniker given to hopped up Opels prior to the rollout of the first OPC model in 1998, but since then, GSi has only made sporadic appearances, most recently in 2007 on the back of the Corsa D. Think of the Insignia GSi as a Regal GS, but sharper and more European.

Instead of the Regal’s 310 horse 3.6-liter V6, the Insignia gets a high-performance 2.0-liter turbo making 260 horsepower, however, the Opel does kick out 295 lb-ft of jam compared to the Buick’s 282 pounding feet. Both cars share a torque vectoring all-wheel drive system but the GSi doesn’t get GM’s new nine-speed autobox, instead, Opel makes due with an older eight-speed unit.

The Germans are also expected to receive a diesel option, which will likely be announced closer to the car’s first public showing in two months time.

While the Buick rides along on suspension with Continuous Dampening Control the Opel gets a 10mm ride height reduction, stiffer shocks, and Opel’s FlexRide chassis technology which includes a new Competition mode, which kicks in uses the ESP button. Double touching it allows the car more yaw and switches off traction control.

“The new Insignia GSi is clearly quicker over one lap of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife than the more powerful Insignia OPC of the previous generation” concluded Director Performance Cars & Motorsport, Volker Strycek after testing.

Probably because the GSi is nearly 400 lbs lighter than the old Insignia OPC 2.8 V6 Turbo.

Along with a lower stance, the GSi gets 20-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S rubbers, compared to the GS’s 19s and Continental ProContact tires. The pair do share a set of four-piston Brembo calipers.

The interiors are also nearly identical, sharing heated and cooled buckets a sportier interior than their siblings, however, the Insignia is more achtung than the Regal’s slightly warmer confines.

Europeans can begin ordering the Insignia GSi in October, shortly after its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
