New Patent for New C8 Gearbox? by Evan Williams June 5, 2019 Share Comments We’re still more than a month away from full mid-engine Corvette. Which means there’s still plenty of time for us to dig into the rumor mill and try and figure out what’ll be under that camouflage. The latest is a new patent for what could be the car’s new gearbox. A couple of months ago, we weighed in on rumors that the C8 would be arriving with an eight-speed box. And since there aren’t many eight-speed dual-clutch options out there, it seemed likely that the Corvette could end up with a ZF box that was related to the gearbox of the Porsche 918. But now, MidEngineCorvetteForum posters have found a patent that GM might be making its own. There’s a lot of boring patent jargon, but the important thing is two clutches and eight forward gears. Now the document doesn’t confirm that it’ll be going into the C8, or anything else. After all, engineers often patent everything they come up with. Just in case. But where else would GM be looking at putting an 8-speed dual-clutch box? We’ll just have to wait and see for the July 18 reveal.
