GM Creates OnStar Mobile App for Your Smartphone

General Motors is expanding the reach of OnStar with an app for your smartphone. The new app will be free for six months if customers download it before July 31.

OnStar Guardian, as GM is calling it, will allow customers to use their OnStar services even if they aren’t in their car. Whether you’re at home, on a walk, or in someone else’s non-GM vehicle, you can access safety services.

“OnStar Guardian reimagines what it means to have OnStar protection – it’s no longer a technology that is solely tied to the vehicle,” said Jeff Haase, head of OnStar Guardian, GM Global Innovation in a statement. “This app helps OnStar members and their loved ones be safe out there using the power of OnStar, no matter what vehicle they are in.”

OnStar has become a revenue center for GM. The system is a rich font of data collection for the automaker. GM has previously said it intends to monetize the data it has collected in its cars over the last two decades. With constant access to you through your phone, GM will likely be opening another avenue of data collection.

OnStar Guardian will offer mobile crash response, roadside assistance, emergency services, and location statuses.
