Cadillac, Crossovers Drive GM Sales in February

Despite a record-setting month for three models and double-digit growth for two more, February saw GM sales down from the same period last year.

General Motors reported 220,905 cars, trucks, and crossovers delivered to customers in February in the US. Those numbers were bolstered by a best February ever for GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Equinox and Chevy Traverse. The Chevrolet Suburban saw double-digit growth in sales, as did the GMC Terrain.

GM is happy with sales and market so far this year, Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations said that “consumer confidence is at its highest level since 2000, the economy is strong, our newest products are selling very well and we have successfully managed the transition to the 2018 model year far better than most of our competitors.”

Cadillac saw a 14-percent gain versus that month a year ago, with the XT5, ATS, and Escalade all performing well. Cadillac reports that Escalade sales are up 10 percent, with transaction prices up $1,400 per unit, despite strong competition from the all-new Lincoln Navigator. Buick cars fared well, with an increase of 33 percent in deliveries balancing losses from the Encore and Envision.

Commercial GM sales were up 15 percent, up 30 percent for the year and showing strong growth in full-size trucks.

Despite the pluses, sales were down 6.9 percent compared to what the automaker called “an exceptionally strong” February 2017. But the fewer sales saw more revenue, incentive spending was down more than $500 per vehicle.

Other big sales drops came from Camaro, down 21 percent, Impala, down 53.4 percent, and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, which saw drops of 20.8 and 32.1 percent respectively.
