2019 Silverado to Gain 2.7-Liter Turbo Four Cylinder by Sebastien Bell May 18, 2018 Share Comments The half-ton segment is getting its first turbo-four in 2019 thanks to the new Chevrolet Silverado. Standard on the LT and the RST models, the 2.7-liter inline four will churn out a respectable 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque. That’s not an insignificant step up over the 4.3-liter V6, which only made 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque. GM also says that despite being two-cylinders down on the competition, Silverados fitted with the I4 will have similar payload capability thanks to the high torque that the turbo provides. The reasons behind the lower cylinder count, as ever, is fuel economy. Weighing in at around 380 lbs less than the V6 and will get you to 60 in less than seven seconds. “Everybody’s going to get their chance to claim they’re winning,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer of GM’s full-size pickups. “We’re going to claim that we’re the highest fuel efficiency vehicle and what it means for our customer and the value we give back to our customer,” If you’d prefer to double-up on cylinders, though, Chevy’s still got you covered with the 5.3-liter V8 (355 hp, 383 lb-ft) that can be fitted to the both the LT and RST trims, optionally. The LT Trail Boss, meanwhile, comes with the 5.3 as standard. And the 6.2-liter (420 hp, 460 lb-ft) comes as an option on the LTZ and the High Country trims. Production on the new crew cab V8s starts in the third quarter of 2018, with regular- and double-cabs production starting in the final quarter of 2018.
