GMC May Get An SUV That Looks Like A Hummer To Rival Jeep Wrangler

GMC May Get An SUV That Looks Like A Hummer To Rival Jeep Wrangler
Wednesday, January 28, 2015
Posted by Zac Estrada

General Motors might finally be serious about giving GMC some distinctive product, and one that would give the hot-selling Jeep Wrangler some competition.

GM is asking for feedback from GMC dealers about a new model that would go head-to-head with the Jeep and sport some cues from the defunct Hummer brand, sources close to matter told the Wall Street Journal.

Those Hummer styling cues mean this rumored GMC could bear some resemblance to the Hummer Hx concept from the 2008 Detroit Auto Show – or at least share it's open-topped spirit. That concept was also powered by a 3.6-liter V6 like the current Wrangler and within two inches of the four-door Wrangler Unlimited's length.

Top 10 Safest Affordable Midsize Cars of 2015

Jan 23, 2015 - 2:14 PM - by

Safety should be an important consideration for anyone buying a new car, but it’s probably your top priority with a family to haul around.

According to IIHS, there are six midsize cars that are moderately priced and have earned Top Safety Pick+ awards, while nine others have earned Top Safety Pick honors. But just because they’ve all earned accolades from IIHS doesn’t mean they’re all equally safe – some performed better than others in certain crash tests.

GM Issues Stop-Sale on Crossovers Over Faulty Goodyear Tires

Jan 22, 2015 - 3:02 PM - by

General Motors has issues an immediate stop-sale order on three of its crossovers due to faulty tires.

About 6,500 units of the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave are covered by the stop-sale because they all use 18-inch Goodyear Fortera HL tires. Goodyear has announced a recall of 48,500 of these tires because 'very small' cracks have been found in the tread during regular

GMI Drives: Holden MY14 Trax LTZ 1.4iTi

Orange Whip

Michael McWilliams

22 January 2015

The focus group has spoken... and Holden have answered with a nice turbo cherry on top of their tech packed sub-compact SUV.

Yes people, the SUV is very close to being THE default body style on the market despite the definition being diluted with each new iteration. But as Charles Darwin said, "It is not the strongest or most intelligent who survive but those who can best manage change."

When the Trax first arrived on Australian shores, it brought with it a superbly capable version of MyLink which enabled use of smart phone apps to "outsource" some of the more expensive functions you would normally pay for on a vehicles options... [Read More]

OpEd Meet 2017 (Buick) Commodore and 2019 Monaro

Doom and Gloom for Holden? No.
January 21st, 2015
by MonaroSS

Here is How Holden
Fights Back to Victory

So we all love Buick's Avenir. People hope it may foretell the next Commodore, but no, the Commodore will be a FWD Opel that most mainstream buyers will love and not care about driven wheels. For those who like performance there will likely be a rear wheel torque biased AWD and 450hp 450 lb-ft TTV6.

All of the mainly Aussie members here who say, and many hope,... [Read More]

Top 10 Detroit Debuts

You might have heard that the Detroit economy is on the upswing and so is the North American International Auto Show.

You could say the COBO Center just got a mid-cycle refresh and as you can guess it’s bigger, better and more efficient (sort of) than ever before. But time is short and what you really care about is inside, so what are you waiting for?

OpEd Do we call it Buick Riviera?

A Couple of Omega Coupes?
January 13th, 2015
by MonaroSS

Should Buick
Bring Back Riviera?

So we all love Buick's Avenir. People asked me to do a Coupe so here is my take.

People may not realize but the Avenir does not have a traditional Buick sweepspear - it has a coke-bottle-hip and as a Coupe with that hip looks a little Camaro wanna-be with that hip, and also a little old-manish. So to make it look fresher I smoothed out the hip to more flowing curves. But as a tip to the mid 70's Riv's I added a dip in the window-line and a deep dip in the side sculpting -... [Read More]

Buick Explores Future with Avenir Concept

New design proportion, device integration, rejuvenating interior push brand forward.
January 11, 2015

DETROIT – Buick introduced the Avenir concept today in advance of the North American International Auto Show – a flagship sedan exploring progressive design with new levels of passenger well-being and technology integration.

The Avenir – French for future – is distinguished by its premium sports proportions and all-new interpretations of traditional Buick cues. It is the creation of a global team of Buick designers and sculptors who were inspired by historic Buick concepts, which pushed traditional... [Read More]

OpEd Cadillac-V Mid-Engined Exotic Should be Radical

A Mid-Engined Corvette means a Caddy Too

Cadillac-V & Cadillac-VR
Make it Wild
Make a Bold Statement

If the test mule of a new GM mid-engined sports car as seen becomes a Corvette, it will almost certainly become a Cadillac. My opinion is that Corvette owners are both much older and more conservative than the wealthier customers Cadillac is now seeking to bring into their showrooms. Wealthy luxury buyers may like a heritage Old World country home but often have a modern glass and chrome office if not town house. Equally they may have a dark metallic grey town car but their... Buick Goes Topless With 2016 Cascada

Drop-top coupe shares many aspects with Opel sibling
January 11, 2015
By: Nick Saporito

After a break from major product reveals for Buick, the brand is back in play with the reveal of the 2016 Cascada convertible. The Opel-derived vehicle will come stateside in 2016, confirming long-standing rumors that the car was headed to U.S. shores.

Cascada marks the first Buick drop-top since the Reatta convertible’s short stint nearly 25 years ago. The car also strengthens ties between Buick and Opel. In fact, Buick even borrows the Cascada moniker from Opel in this case. This shared aspect foreshadows the rest of the convertible as well.

2015 Detroit Auto Show Preview

Jan 09, 2015 - 2:18 PM - by

This year’s Detroit Auto Show is shaping up to be one of the largest in recent memory in terms of product reveals.

Major debuts include the new Chevy Volt, Nissan Titan, Toyota Tacoma, Cadillac CTS-V, Acura NSX, Honda FCV Concept, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Infiniti Q60 concept, Lexus GS-F, Audi Q7, Mercedes GLE and two new products from Buick including a crossover and a convertible. Some other reveals are still a mystery, but we expect to see a huge performance announcement from Ford, including the introduction of the Focus RS to North America, as well as a possible Raptor successor and even a new flagship sports car!

January 9th, 2015

Front or Mid?
Where is Corvette's Future?

So we have now seen the test mule of a new GM mid-engined sports car. It could be a new Cadillac, but in all likelihood it would be both a Corvette and a Cadillac to increase production numbers and amortize the cost of what is likely to be a carbon fiber tub.

We all love the front V8 powered Corvette but there are finite limitations to getting power to the ground. Move the weight over those rear wheels though and you get both traction benefits and sharper turn responses for track work.

We don't know if this would be an add to the Corvette... [Read More]

Caddy CT6
Rolling Past in the Street?

So we are getting close to seeing it this year. What will it look like? We don't yet know, but we do know a lot. We actually know it's basic shape and features from the body-in-white CAD drawing GM released and which I previously did a chop from. We also know from camo cars it will have a shallow but wide grille more like Elmiraj.

But that chop I did previously was devoid of the character and features only a polished dark color can really bring to life. I believe this is getting close...

Is The Opel Adam Too Edgy For Buick?

Jan 03, 2015 - 1:04 PM - by Z284ever
There are more than just passing rumors that the Opel Adam is coming here as a Buick. First, let me say that Opel is doing a great job at marketing and positioning the Adam. Far better than anything I've seen from GMNA in a long time, if ever.

Before we go any further, I'm going to ask you guys to click Opel's Adam site. and spend some time there and familiarize yourselves, that way we can all be on the same page.

Okay, see what I mean? How is Buick going to possibly market this car without having to neuter that marketing or radically change it's stodgy image? And if their goal is to tone the Adam down, well then, what's the point? I do think that GM needs the Adam in the US desperately.

The question is, does Buick have the stones to sell it here without watering it down?

What Should Cadillac's "Sub-ATS" Be?

Dec 31, 2014 - 4:33 PM - by Z284ever
First, Happy and Healthy New Year, GMI friends!!!!!!!!!

It seems we've been talking about this sub-ATS car, back and forth on various threads in the past few days. I'm thinking it deserves a thread of it's own. The products this vehicle would be competing with are the Audi A3, the BMW 1 series, and the MB CLA - all front drivers. Cadillac's marketing chief, Uwe Ellinghaus, is on record stating more than once that he would like this car to be a RWD, thus separating Cadillac from the competition.
This is a good article to read:

There are some pros and cons here. Ellinghaus wants RWD, for the styling potential and proportions more than anything else. He concedes that... [Read More]

It's Safe To Say That a Code 130R Type Car Is Dead.....

Dec 21, 2014 - 7:56 PM - by Z284ever
Certainly a Code based on a RWD architecture like Alpha is long dead. But GM, especially Chevrolet, have a gaping hole of anything cool in the $20-$24K range. I think it's long past time for that to change. By necessity such a product would have to be FWD based, on the Gamma or Delta architectures. Luckily for GM, they can print money with those two architectures. And there are plenty of off the shelf powertrains, already developed and paid for, which GM could readily use. I really don't know what is stopping GM from addressing this segment. It's rivals have no issues with it.

Here is some inspiration for Chevy:

Real Sport Real Utility

Michael McWilliams

03 December 2014

As the focus group helps companies focus on exactly what we all want to drive.... and makes an aggregate picture which spits out the same thing as everyone else, in upside down land we are still building automotive products that are something other than average.

The car based utility is a distinctly aussie invention originally hailing from Ford Australia, and, both Holden and Ford have built utes continuously since the late 50's. Here's the latest evolution of the breed from Holden which shows old school preferences can still be delivered on new world platforms. This is essentially a Camaro with a rear seat delete and a boot for weekend sized party toys.

GMI @ LAIAS 2014: Why the 2016 ELR was a No-Show and other Cadillac News

Nov 23, 2014 - 4:20 PM - by vanshmack
Cadillac has big plans for its electrified coupe.
November 24, 2014
By: Mike DeMattia

In the weeks leading up to the Los Angeles International Auto Show, it was widely reported that Cadillac would use that venue to debut a significantly upgraded ELR. However, a week before the show, the car was removed from the LAIAS website's world debut page, and no reason given...That is, until now!

In discussing with Cadillac insiders what they refer to as ELR 2.0, GMI has learned that the debut was delayed due to system integration difficulties. According to GMI's sources, the ELR 2.0 will be a "highly autonomous vehicle" and that a few of the features planned for the car are taking longer to... [Read More]

GMI @ LAIAS 2014: Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

GM's headlining concept for the 2014 LAIAS brings with it many more questions than answers.
November 22, 2014
By: Mike DeMattia

Chevrolet is going great lengths to sell an image in introducing its Colorado ZR2 concept truck. This is in evidence with "Andy", the fit and tan Chevrolet product rep decked out in North Face gear, all while exuding enthusiasm in abundance. What is also clear, is that this truck brings with it some serious hardware: Turbo diesel four-cylinder engine with a boat-load of torque, front and rear driver-selectable, locking differentials, King coil-over air shocks, and enough ground clearance to crawl...
