GMI Drives: 2015 GMC Yukon Denali

Jul 22, 2014 - 8:30 AM - by nsap
Yukon Denali packs few excuses, plenty of excess.
July 22, 2014
By: Nick Saporito

If a vehicle embodied America, there’s no doubt it would be a full-size SUV. Sure, the sales heyday of these truck-based Mommy Mobiles are long gone, but lust for them remains. With V-8 engines and tons of ruggedness, they’re complete and utter overkill for most households. They’re brash and typically dipped in chrome with a list of creature comforts as long as they are tall.

Frankly, the excess is exactly why Americans love these trucks. And after some time with GMC’s revamped Yukon Denali, the love is completely understandable.

General Motors has historically always applied a... [Read More]

July 19, 2014
By: Nick Saporito

Chevrolet's SS Sedan will be gaining a much requested manual transmission and magnetic suspension for the 2015 model year. The new options have long been rumored as additions for the 2015 model, though were finally validated today thanks to GM's online order guide. According to the guide the 2015 SS will offer the Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission as an option with a new 3.70 rear axle, while GM's Magnetic... [Read More]

Some Full-size SUVs to Gain 360 Degree Vision, Eight-speed Automatic for 2015

Jul 14, 2014 - 8:57 AM - by nsap
GM already adding features to the still-new SUV lineup.
July 14, 2014
By: Nick Saporito

Despite having been on the market only a few months, General Motors is already planning to add content to its lineup of 2015 full-size SUVs. According to documents obtained by GMI, at least some of the SUVs will gain a 360-degree camera system and GM’s new eight-speed automatic transmission in the next few months.

GMI recently obtained the official wiring schematics of the 2015 SUV lineup, which include schematics associated with a “360 Degree Vision” system. The documents confirm that GM will add a camera to each exterior mirror. The two side-view cameras will work in... [Read More]

Exclusive: Half-ton Trucks to Get New Eight-Speed Automatic Transmission

Jul 11, 2014 - 12:51 PM - by ChevyRules
Silverado and Sierra to gain two extra gears
July 11, 2014
By: Mark Bono

Rumors have been swirling around about GM's half-ton trucks gaining an eight-speed automatic transmission for the 2015 model year. We were let down after the release of the 2015 Order Guide for the Silverado and Sierra did not contain any mention of them gaining GM's new eight-speed automatic. We naturally thought the full-size twins will be soldiering on for another year with the six-speed automatic transmission.

Today though we have received two pictures from an anonymous source confirming that the 2015 full-size trucks will be getting the new eight-speed transmission with a catch..... Just like when GM transitioned from the... [Read More]

GMI Drives: Holden VF Commodore SSV Sportwagon

Sporting Wagonlove

Modern marketing allows many liberties to be taken in the name of desirability. Some call it "artistic license". Others, "misdirection". Our recent drives in the Cruze Sportwagon and Captiva Sport Utility Vehicle found no traces of actual sport within. Finally we uncover something that represents what it says on the label. The Holden Sportwagon is both wagon and sporting conveyance.

What a shame that the world doesn't seem to like them any more....

BREAKING: GM Recalls 8.4 Million More Vehicles; Stock Temporarily Halted

Jun 30, 2014 - 2:11 PM - by nsap
Company increases second quarter financial charge to $1.2 Billion.
June 30, 2014
By: Nick Saporito

Today General Motors announced the recall of 8.4 million more vehicles, bringing the total to 25 million vehicles recalled so far in 2014. Today's announcement includes six different recalls, with the majority of the recalled vehicles related to unintended ignition key rotation. GM also announced with the recalls that they will be increasing the financial charge for the second quarter to $1.2 Billion.

The recalls are part of a comprehensive safety review GM has been conducting internally since the original ignition key recall that was announced on February 13th. Subsequently, GM added... [Read More]

Does GM need a revival?

Jun 29, 2014 - 12:47 PM - by NoStopN
As the title suggests, this is just my opinion. And, I can be long-winded.

I'll start this column by saying that from the outside looking in, GM's advertising seems to be hit & miss. Recent Buick TV ads & most of GMC's TV ads have been very good without the need to try to push a "type" of customer. What I mean is, these ads have not stereotyped a certain type of buyer for their products. Cadillac & Chevy ads have pigeon-holed their clientele into a certain class. However, advertising is a topic for another conversation.

So, what is there to fix?

I began to look over sales results for most of GM's models, & I was surprised. I don't usually pay attention to monthly sales results. That's because a new GM vehicle isn't in my driveway. Also, most of GM's vehicles aren't quite what I'm looking for. While looking over those results, I saw a common pattern. I call it the roller coaster.... [Read More]

First Look: 2015 Cadillac CTS Sporting New Grille

New CTS gets a new snout to support new emblem.
June 25, 2014
By: GMI Staff

The above photo (pulled from Twitter) showcases the first live shot of the revised 2015 Cadillac CTS grille. As Cadillac rolls out its new logo design to the product portfolio, all of the brand's products will receive minor design tweaks to accommodate the wreath-less emblem. The 2015 ATS Coupe will be the first Cadillac on the market with the new logo, with this 2015 CTS quickly following it. The 2015 ATS sedan is also receiving a new front clip with the new emblem.

In addition to a revised grille, the 2015 CTS is gaining a few new features, including a new inductive charging system for smartphones.... [Read More]

GMI Drives: Holden Cruze MY14 Diesel CDX Sportwagon

Waiting for the SUV fad to end? Well I hate to tell you, but it's got some legs in it yet. For those of you less impressed with a high centre of gravity and worse fuel economy for no good reason, there are still some great wagons around.

The Holden Cruze CDX, though less contemporary in the design department, now has the tech and practicality that would have made this a classic in a non SUV focused market. It wont be a classic to everyone else, but it will be exactly the type of vehicle that will be a favourite with owners.

That's good

$30,190 for top spec is... [Read More]

2015 Sierra Denali Gets Magnetic Suspension

Jun 23, 2014 - 10:16 AM - by Lloyd-TX
GMC's luxury truck gets a luxury suspension system.
June 23, 2014
By: GMI Staff

Today GMC announced that the Sierra Denali will gain Magnetic Ride Control suspension for the 2015 model-year. The high-end suspension is typically reserved for General Motors products that are in the luxury realm, which the Denali qualifies, however this is the first time the the system has been offered in a full-size pickup truck.

Magnetic Ride Control replaces a conventional mechanical shock absorber with a tube filled with magneto-rheological fluid and small particles of iron. Subsequently, the system reads the road surface every millisecond and is able to adjust the... [Read More]

GMI Drives: Holden Captiva 7 LS

Basic Instincts

Michael McWilliams

10 June 2014

As manufacturers look at new ways to make their SUVs seem new and exciting, Holdens Captiva 7 makes do with solid but aging foundations.

The Good:
Torque from the 2.2 Turbo Diesel dwarfs others in this price range
Still a really good size
Electric Handbrake and Remote Central locking are useful
Entry price of $32,990 is very good for a diesel 7 seater

The Bad:
Looks are getting a bit dowdy
Interior lacks flair and technology
Too many beeps
Auto-lock locks when refueling

You can see... [Read More]

Opinion: Do Numbers Lie?

Jun 01, 2014 - 4:55 PM - by NoStopN
Early this morning, I found myself bored. So, after a breakfast stop in town, I decided to drive down the main road in my city. This road has the most traffic, so obviously, the most auto dealerships (new & pre-owned). Our GM dealer is located inside of another major road & therefore gets plenty of passers-by. But, about 2 miles down the street, something caught my attention. First, it was a line of GMC Terrains with no license plates. As I drove by, I scanned the rest of the parking lot. A sea of brand new vehicles sat patiently for the right buyers. This parking lot was once home to a separate GM franchise during the "old" GM era, but is now the domain of a lawn care dealer. I drove by only to return about a half hour later for a closer look. For the 20 years that I have held a driver's license, I have repeated this sight seeing tour more times than I can remember. Today, I scanned about half of the trucks/CUVs on the overflow lot. In addition to the Terrains &... [Read More]

GMI Drives: 2014 Cadillac ELR

May 08, 2014 - 8:26 PM - by nsap
More fashion accessory for the wealthy than improved Volt
May 8, 2014
By: Nick Saporito

Arguably a piece of rolling artwork with more lines of software code than the defunct space shuttle fleet, the ELR may be the most polarizing embodiment of Cadillac’s Art & Science theme to date. As such, within the spectrum of form versus function, Cadillac’s new coupe rests almost entirely on the side of form. It is a car found within an exclusive automotive category; that of fashion accessory or toy for the one percent but it does have some redeeming qualities as an automobile.

“I’m just admiring your Cadillac – it’s so beautiful,” asserted a nervous onlooker of our ELR tester as he slowly... [Read More]

2014 Buick Regal takes solid steps forward; still one of GM’s hidden gems
May 6, 2014
By: Nick Saporito
Photos: Nick Saporito, General Motors

It seems like just yesterday we broke the news that Buick would bring the Opel Insignia to North America as the Regal. The European sedan was expected to revive a more youthful Buick image with a small displacement turbo four, superb handling and a six-speed manual gearbox. While the car has won many enthusiasts’ hearts, it lacks mainstream appeal due to no all-wheel-drive and other oddities.

Buick has attempted to redress Regal’s grievances in the refreshed 2014 model. The revamped car received slight revisions across the board, from design... [Read More]

2017 Buick/Holden Mark Reuss is Dreaming of ?

2017 Buick/Holden "people's" Panamera?
May 5th, 2014
by MonaroSS

Mark Reuss has wondered if Buick could sell a Porsche Panamera type of vehicle. And we have seen the sketches on computers at Holden Design that look like Holden is also contemplating such a vehicle. We at this time have no idea about platform or even if it would be RWD/AWD or FWD/AWD. However, we do know something about engines that could be on offer. Certainly the new TTV6 would seem a natural choice for this car. Entry could start at a 2.0 Turbo Ecotec, perhaps with eAssist, but I doubt an atmospheric 2.5 I4 would suit... [Read More]

[Opinion] GM Pays Lip Service to Notion it Abandoned Cost Culture

Apr 29, 2014 - 9:13 PM - by nsap
Feature deletions not indicative of a "customer focused" OEM.
April 29, 2014
By: Nick Saporito

“We’ve moved from a cost culture to a customer culture,” explained General Motors’ CEO Mary Barra during her recent congressional grilling over the company’s litany of vehicle recalls. Her statement provided a capstone to the company’s never-ending attempts to prove to customers and stakeholders that the New GM is truly customer focused and that the bean-counting, cost cutting ways of yesterday have subsided. While New GM is more customer-friendly than The General of the past, its rich legacy of cost-driven decisions is still blatantly obvious to those who follow the... [Read More]

GMI Drives: Holden Barina RS Six Speed Auto and Manual

It's a rare occasion these days when you can get away with actual fun. It's not because our toys have become less fun, but more because our environment continues to become more crowded. The pursuit of living in harmony is beginning to encroach on our ability to laugh out loud without out getting shushed. General Motor's answer to the problem is compact, clever and you can enjoy it at full noise, elbows up wings out.

We at GMInsidenews have now tasted the entire Barina range in Oz and my main problem was the lack of a serious heartbeat. The... [Read More]
