Re: Will New GM Succeed??

Yes, I do think that GM stands a chance. As long as they understand that the car business is about exceeding rather than meeting customers' expectations, about having the sheer ambition to leap passed the competition and start working on exports (people like winners), about exploring new horizons and bringing all those issues together which have become more relevant by the day: reduce foreign oil imports, reduce fuel consumption and emissions, do something about the growing traffic problems.

I hope so , my job depends on our success . I'm hoping they make better decisions.
GM needs to become proactive and anticipate changes in the market instead of the reactive company that gets caught with their pants down when the market shifts .

Re: Will New GM Succeed??

GM's upcoming lineup is going to be very competitive and in some cases "best in class" with world class powertrains, couple that with lower costs/debt and the Volt which I think will be a gamechanger and GM will have the product to survive and even thrive in the future.

Re: Will New GM Succeed??

I do wish the VERY BEST for GM and its' personnel!

However, trying to be realistic, it would not be a surprise if they control less than a 16% market share in the future market when all is said and done ... UNLESS ... GM can CLEARLY DEMONSTRATE radically superior product in ALL aspects including pricing and fuel economy for at least 3 generations of development cycles.

Unfortunately so much "ill will" has been generated by the downsizing/bankruptcy process.

Only establishing a repution of clearly superior product/pricing (VALUE) ... plus TIME will overcome the negative impressions generated over the last 24 months or so.

However, there is the opportunity of the "forgotten" US market segment, those that URGENTLY NEED a DOMESTIC "nano" ... although that is probably not within the NEW GM skills/capabilities, ie, completely outside of GM's mindset.

Re: Will New GM Succeed??

GM will experience early success, and everyone will think GM has succeeded, but the real test will be how good the future products are.
If they are mediocre and left to wither without improvements and updates, GM will spiral down to ultimate defeat.
If they let Bob Lutz lead them into a better future with world class cars, they will not only be successful but also a new automotive leader.
I'm betting GM is finally heading in the right direction, and next year I'll be buying their stock (and hopefully a new ImpalaSS)

Re: Will New GM Succeed??

Success is 100% dependent on how much the government meddles in what direction the chosen leaders want to take the company. GM got itself here for the most part, but the government did create some regulations that have made it more and more difficult for domestic automakers to operate their business. My guess is that most ALL car companies would be surviving this downturn a lot better if auto manufacturers were simply allowed to make what the people want without having to also satisfy all the governments of the world on their own requirements. I actually think fuel economy and taxes on engine size decrease the possible sales of cars dramatically. I for one would probably have one more car if I could pick up some $20k V8 powered lightweight vehicle that is just more or less illegal to build or so heavily taxed or penalized at the moment that it could never reach a customer anywhere near $20k.

I do think GM can survive though. Just have to make sure guys like Bob Lutz get to do what they want and that the fed doesn't dictate to them what they can and can't do. I actually think the impact Lutz has had so far was minimized anyhow just because of the cumbersome management structure that existed before. The 450 manager firings will help Bob out a LOT I am sure. It's mostly now upto to the government to leave them alone and let them work their way out.

Re: Will New GM Succeed??

Sometimes you end up on a little detour - of sorts.

Sometimes everything changes except -

*****

So..... it is still the same deal as it was in 2005.

If they can get to 2012 in acceptable fashion - then no question, "Yes".

Only if they fix the problems with the Cruze and change the name.
Otherwise GM is toast without a class leading Compact.

Re: Will New GM Succeed??

Considering they had to bring Lutz back to make product decisions, I kinda worry where this GM will be without him. I say it's too early to say whether GM will succeed or if this will be the biggest waste of US taxpayer money ever.

Problem is that GM needs a profitable, game changing volume car. While the Volt and Cruze are impressive, neither of them meet all of these requirements.

If the Cruze doesn't meant that requirement, what does?

The Astra. Which we will not get.
The next Focus-which Ford makes.
GM NA gets middling crap once more.
