Re: What Should GM Do With Hummer?
Because Olds was part of GM from GM's inception. Hummer has only been part of GM for 10 years and existed before GM. Olds existed before GM too, almost a century ago.

Re: What Should GM Do With Hummer?
They could sell a ton of hummers even with high gas prices if they would just build a wrangler sized vehicle! The H2 is too big. The H3 is good, but needs a diesel. We - the market, have wanted a smaller hummer from day one. Price it like the old wrangler was, none of this $21000 for a base jeep crap.
I am talking solid offroad ability, simple, and efficient. Diesel and gas options. KISS. It needs to be as solid and simple as the old volkswagen beetle. Fast and cheap to build from a produuction standpoint. Young and old would flock to a modern day dune buggy type vehicle thats fun and affordable. Even with high gas prices we still want to have fun on the weekends, take our surf boards down to the beach with the top down, and bury the thing in mud on the weekends. To lower the cost commit now to a long life cycle, only very minor refreshening and tweaks over its life. Not every vehicle needs to be completely redone every 5 years from the frame up. Only tweak engine and drivelines, not doors, hoods, etc. Get that through your thick heads too GM. Think like a motorcycle company like yamaha, they update there super bikes almost every year, but some models like there dual sports have been around awhile. Why? They work! Just tweak'em and make them even better! Example, jeep. Jeep didn't need a "new" wrangler, all they wanted was more profit. Fine, but I left mine sitting on the dealer lot. I am not paying 23K for a vehicle you used to be able to get for 14K base. Nice try chrysler. Maybe tata should take it if GM doesn't get it. |

Re: What Should GM Do With Hummer?
(Over a centry ago actually) True and true but you have to admit that your post is not much of a reason... We are selling this 'cause we need some cash... BADLY... If the Olds name gets you $1.98 that's better then nothing.

Re: What Should GM Do With Hummer?
Well OK, it is GM's centennial this year. But considering Oldsmobile was there from the start, I don't think GM would be so ready to cash in on the name. If they can't keep it alive, it should die. But Hummer is a different situation. I'd rather not see them sell off Hummer myself, but it would generate some cash flow, for sure. My reason is simply history and reverence, I guess. Selling Olds, would be like selling off Chevy, where selling off Hummer is more like selling Saab.

Re: What Should GM Do With Hummer?
I think that GM could sell Saturn off and it wont be too bad of a thing for them.
Hummer needs to become more of a niche brand (get rid of that H2) and be sold more as a global brand because people want/need off road vehicles all over the world. |

Re: What Should GM Do With Hummer?
I wonder how much can be gotten for Hummer? Hopefully a lot. I just think the money could be used for much more important things, like fixing core products. Espessially at a time like this in GM's history. Maybe if things were going really good it'd be different. But Hummer needs product and product takes a lot of money. Money GM doesn't have, money that could used in much better places.

Re: What Should GM Do With Hummer?
keep Hummer and like everyone says, it should have been a Jeep competitor all along. Drop the H2 as it was the thing that killed the rep of the brand. In fact, it isnt even on the new GMT900 platform.
Focus on the H4 and then make it so that the vehicles also are at least a bit fuel efficient (like a diesel in the H3, or put a hybrid in the H3 (a version that would save gas on the road but destroy everything on everything else). Then, like every GM vehicle, give them a diet). Killing the brand will prove very regrettible as then GM would have to buy out the dealers = not good considering GM wants to save money. In fact, Hummer isnt that important anyways. Dont put funds into the niche brand until you got money for it. But keep it though. Right now, GM needs to have a stable cash flow into its pockets,

Re: What Should GM Do With Hummer?
I would say that Hummer should go back to it's roots. Don't "baby" down the Hummer into a vehicle that tries to have mass market appeal. Don't try to "green" the Hummer. Instead beef it up, go extreme with it and make it into a solid utility vehicle. Make it into something large and capability that will take care of specific needs. Make it capable of competeting with something like the Internation CXT. Make versions that are specific for big goose neck towing duties for people with large horse trailers or campers. I think it needs to be a very specific niche vehicle with low volume.

Re: What Should GM Do With Hummer?
I have wanted/would buy in a heartbeat a smaller hummer! There needs, should have been a smaller wrangler sized vehicle from day one! The world is going to want/need offroad vehicles. Lets not panic because gas is $4. a gallon, thats nuts. Not everyone commutes in a hummer or like most people they have another vehicle for commuting. Thus, them like me, want a smaller hummer regardless of gas prices! We want diesels too! No cost option diesels, it shouldn't cost $7000 more to have a diesel. Get serious. Fill the void GM, or get out of the way and let tata or some other company do it. Thats the problem with GM, they don't listen to what the people want! Or when they do they react so slowly its too late.
I don't think any brand has built such a solid reputation so quickly. Of course I am not a liberal wacko living on the west coast, so what do I know. Thats amazing. I want a smaller, very capable offroader and the guy above me wants a bigger CXT type vehicle. No wonder GM is confused! Last edited by bigtime : 06-18-2008 at 03:41 PM. |
