Re: Which GM Brand(s) Do You Think Should Get The Chop?

Instead of cutting brands, GM should be developing the ones they have rather than all of this Greek alphabet "platforms"..
GM was successful 50 -75 years ago, but they should have built from this success rather than going off in tangents.
One of the worse was the "Chevy" Vega.

I think Chevrolet trucks are rebadges of GMC. Kill them off and save the nice truck. Pontiac needs to junk the boring unoriginal Number car names (G3-G8) and give them real names.

Re: Which GM Brand(s) Do You Think Should Get The Chop?

I think Wagner (sic) should jump out of the highest window in the GM building. They spent the last 10 years becoming a mostly truck company, now he gripes that they don't sell. Poor people won't buy new vehicles because they can't afford them. It does not matter what MPG a 2008 car gets to them, they DON'T buy new. Rich people don't care about the price of the vehicle or gas. IF you can afford a $500 per month car payment, you can afford to buy gas. The issue may be... if you pay off your car, you can buy more gas. I just heard of an '02 H2 wholeselling for $12k.... That's nuts (and I'll take two , please!) Hey Rick.. The future is longer than the end of your nose. Shut the hell up and build us what we want. And stop being such a wuss!!!

Re: Which GM Brand(s) Do You Think Should Get The Chop?

I had a tough choice between Hummer and Buick...

Hummer needs no explanation... Ghey azz urban assault vehicles. Enough said
Buick? Why Buick you ask? Buick ceased to be Buick after the Regal was axed. Their current line up is boring and unappealing...

Cut one, or cut both... But keep GMC, and stop producing trucks under the Chevy banner.

btw. wlkjr, hit the nail on the head. Bring back names like Acadian (G5), give the G8 the name Grand Prix, it deserves the name, and call the G6 Phoenix.

Re: Which GM Brand(s) Do You Think Should Get The Chop?

I voted for "None".
BUT if one was cut, I'd go w/Chevrolet! I know alot of you would disagree w/this & think that I'm crazy for even saying this but I don't care. I am not a Chevy kind of guy.
I understand their purpose as the bread & butter brand which in a sense = boring, but not always.

I am glad you put that "But Not Always" in there because......
Chevy has some of the most fun cars of anyone....
Corvette
Camaro (Soon)
HHR SS
Cobalt SS

Yes Chevy has some Plain Jane cars but to appeal to the broadest market you need a wide range of cars. Chevy has the best across the board lineup of cars of any GM brand. Everything from econoboxes to one of the highest of performance cars and every one can be affordable to a middle class worker, even a Corvette if you get the base model.

Now if you want to talk boring just name any Buick...

I think they should kill GMC, Buick and Saturn. Give the Vue and Sky to Chevy, The Vue as the new Equinox and the Sky can be rebadged as the "Stingray"....

I own 2 Chevys and a Saturn and I wouldn't trade any of them for anything.
2007 HHR
1982 El Camino SS
2008 Saturn Sky.

Buick!? Boring!?

How about Buick Skylark Sweepspear. Buick Riviera. Buick Wildcat convertible. Buick Gran Sport. Buick Grand National. Buick Park Avenue, Buick Enclave. Or how about the Buick Velite concept or the Buick Bengal concept? Bet you didn't even know there was a Buick short bed pick-up, huh?

Yes, Buick is boring. Now. It used to have some cool cars, my first car was a '62 Skylark 2dr hardtop. All Buick has now are 2 boring sedans and a CUV (yes, the best Lambda....but still). All those cars you mentioned are dead and gone and say nothing of Buick's current lineup, which is....well, boring.

Re: Which GM Brand(s) Do You Think Should Get The Chop?

And about big SUVs...
If Suburban and Tahoe are an image problem for Chevy, they should be removed from Chevy's line-up. GMC would handle the task of selling big SUVs - Yukon and Yukon XL.
Chevy would build only cars, Equinox, Traverse and Silverado (work truck - not evil gas guzzler) and the green Volt.

For one you are talking about cars from a time when just about all GM cars had some excitement to them and you are talking about concept vehicles, I am talking about what they have on the market right now... BORING!!!!

Re: Which GM Brand(s) Do You Think Should Get The Chop?

Mark my words...

Reuters
GM reassures dealers only Hummer brand is for sale
Tuesday July 8, 4:57 pm ET

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp (NYSE:GM - News) is not planning a sale of any of its brands other than the Hummer line of SUVs, GM's North American sales chief said in an e-mail to the automaker's U.S. dealers.

Mark LaNeve, GM's vice president for North American sales and marketing, said none of GM's brands other than Hummer were up for sale or being considered as candidates for closure, despite growing speculation to the contrary.

Re: Which GM Brand(s) Do You Think Should Get The Chop?

Hummer seems the most dangerous at this point because the market is shifting away from SUVs at a ridiculous rate. Hummer has no sedans, only SUVs, so their image alone is toxic.

Re: Which GM Brand(s) Do You Think Should Get The Chop?

Here we go.....

Chevrolet: Full service brand for the masses. Full line of high quality bread and butter cars and trucks.

Pontiac: NO TRUCKS OR SUVS. Small, Mid-size, Full-size, Sports Car. All RWD.
Youth oriented.

Buick: Targeting the soft luxury market. By that I mean competing with the SOFT luxury market. IE FWD Acuras, Lexus, etc...... Focus on luxury, comfort, and technology.

Cadillac: Everything is fine here. Full service Performance Luxury Cars. I have no suggestions for Cadillac.

Saturn: Americanized version of Opel (I realize it already is) Providing the whole idea works.

GMC: You cannot chop GMC if you intend to keep Pontiac and Buick. PB Dealers must have a truck option, it is that simple.

Hummer: Create fuel efficient options!!!! the H2 is built on the Tahoe platform. Hybrid model anyone? H3: Direct injection, diet, turbos? Jeep Wrangler competitor?

Saab: Vehicles must be priced lower (I work at a Saab dealer, this is a primary problem) Saab vehicles need to offer a luxury alternative at a great price. A 9-3 Convertible for 32-35K would be much more appealing than 40K.
