Workers: GM Moraine plant to close Dec. 23 (GMT 360)

Quote:
Employees of General Motors Corp.'s Moraine plant were told Friday, Oct. 3, that the last day of production at the plant will be Dec. 23.

In June, the automaker said the Moraine plant will be closed by 2010 or earlier.

But plant worker Jim Marlow and former worker Tracy Merritt both said Friday that plant employees were given the closing date of Dec. 23.

I am permantly terminated effective Nov, 5th via Buyout. I will miss working at GM and had a great life experience. I have no ill feelings towards GM and that is why I continue to own my 1000 shares. I just wish my time at GM would have ended in better times.

Re: Workers: GM Moraine plant to close Dec. 23 (GMT 360)

I just want to add, Jim Marlow was running a ticket against the current Union leadership ( I thought he retired?!?!?!). Tracy Merritt took the last buyout and took a job in D.C. So I can believe the news, But at the same time the Union and or GM hasn't made the announcment.

*Update

I called someone there at the plant, The news was posted on DDN and announced on the radio before the Workers were told...Figures. But the announcment is true.

What does that have anything to do with the plant closing down?

Oh the MPG that the GMT 360's get. Personally I don't mind the MPG I get out of mine. I knew what I was buying, I knew how much driving I was going to do. 18 MPG suits me well ( I drive mainly on Highway)

When I got the wife the Trailblazer 2wd, She was working in the inner city school system. Yes in the worst part of the city. She felt safe in the Trailblazer to drive on I-75 and on the side streets where the thugs Loitered in the middle of the streets.

I got myself the Envoy 4wd, Well because nothing really excited me at the time. I looked at the benefits of driving the Envoy on I-75 and in the winter (GM Made us come in even if it was a lvl 3 Snow Emergency where only emegency workers were allowed on the roads lol) I also got front row parking. lolz

The biggest problem with this platform is gas prices, But really doesn't help is that it is the same thing as the '02 model. There is only over 1million of these GMT360's out there.

Sad news.

Inevitable, but very sad nonetheless.

I should've gotten a 4WD Envoy. My mom got stuck on US 42 during that snowstorm in her 2WD Envoy. Couldn't get any traction at all.

But this sucks. There goes the last GM assembly plant in southwestern Ohio...

No, GM thinks by killing a 5 passenger RWD SUV that a 7-8 passenger FWD Crossover will pick up those sales.

GM to close Trailblazer/Envoy plant Dec 23rd

GM to close Trailblazer/Envoy plant Dec 23rd

General Motors will close its Moraine Assembly plant near Dayton, Ohio on December 23rd — earlier than the planned 2010 closure. The plant builds the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X. Less than 80 days away, the closing will mark the demise of all four models.

With Isuzu pulling out of the U.S. market in January, the death of the Ascender is no surprise. As for Saab’s 9-7X, it is widely expected to be replaced by the superior 2010 9-4X.

As for the TrailBlazer and Envoy, both vehicles have become extremely dated and have been indirectly replaced by the Chevrolet Traverse, Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Acadia, and GMC Terrain.

A company representative said the 1,100 workers at the Moraine facility were informed Friday of the planned closure. GM’s Oklahoma City plant previously built three of the four models, but it closed over a year ago.

Man! I do miss my 1994 and 2000 Chevy Blazers! They were WONDERFUL vehicles to drive. Perfect size if you needed to haul stuff around in, or make out with women in <smile>, and didn't want the a vehicle the size of a Surburban or Yukon. SIGH!!

$40+ an hour??? C'mon. Get the facts straight son. Why is it that when people start talking how much per hour, they always inflate the autoworkers rate by adding in benefits, vacation, etc.? They never seem to do that when one is speaking of other jobs.

Re: Workers: GM Moraine plant to close Dec. 23 (GMT 360)

The Trailblazer/Envoy has never really been revised. That said, in the world of $3.50+++ gas and crossover popularity.. I just don't think even an ultra modern version will sell.

The sinking markets, economy and lack of credit is more enough to kill this plant sooner than it otherwise would. Sad the way things are going...
