The actual closing of the plant would not be 'deceitful' per say, but they went about this in a very unethical, and frankly illegal (breached contract) sort of way. GMCL said 'we will keep operations as they are now, or we will have a chit chat about it, and give you some new truckies to play with in a couple years, so please help us out by saving some monies.' CAW said 'sure thing boss, just let us know if anything changes, and we will talk it over.' And then not even 2 weeks later crap hits the fan. If the situation was handled properly, I'm sure there wouldn't be such a huge issue (loss of jobs is a loss of jobs, but the way you end them is quite important). This has NOT gone over well for either party. It will end with lost jobs for the CAW, and lost sales for GM, and millions upon millions of wasted dollars. Taxpayers don't want to hand out half billion dollar loans to a lost cause. And frankly, I don't want to move to Mexico to get a job when I graduate with my degree (just out of curiosity, does anyone know what a GM engineer at a Mexican plant makes per hour? I wonder if the comparable drop in non-skilled wages is the same as the drop in skilled wages for engineers and techs). |

Re: Union blockades GM headquarters in Oshawa
Plant workers at a Mexican plant make on average of less than $5 an hour. Techs are no more than $10 and engineers, well it depends on what they need you for, it can range between $20k a year to $100k a year, with the $100k ones being somewhat rare, the majority are around $20k. Mexico has a slower economy compared to the US and Canada, $20 is actually a lot of money and you may even be considered to be in the upper class.
