UAW Walks Out on Chrysler

Didn't see this posted anywhere.

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com...10markets.aspx

The United Auto Workers are walking out of their jobs at Chrysler passes as a strike deadline passes without a deal.

It feels like déjà-vu: The United Auto Workers are striking at a U.S. automaker.

Just like last month's negotiations at General Motors (GM, news, msgs), the UAW is working to hammer out a contract deal with newly private Chrysler. And workers walked off their jobs at Chrysler for the first time in 20 years after the 11 a.m. ET deadline came and went.

The UAW and Chrysler were making slow progress late last night, as Chrysler is seeking more cost savings than the deal struck between the UAW and GM. Chrysler reportedly wants to cut more jobs, as well as health-care concessions that had been granted to GM and Ford Motor (F, news, msgs) in 2005 but not to Chrysler.

Continued at link...

Edit:
This article is actually better:

Sounds like Chrylser was smart in building it's inventory; it practically neutralizes the effect of the strike. That will certainly keep some pressure off during negotiations.

Re: UAW Walks Out on Chrysler

This wasn't a big surprise. Now the question is, will Cerberus stand tougher than GM, since it supposedly wants deeper cuts than GM asked for?

Indeed this is the big question. My bet is, Chrysler plants will be down for a much longer time than anyone else's.

Chrysler has at least three months’ worth of most vehicles in stock and has shut half of its United States assembly plants this week to let those inventories thin out.
That's all the info the article offers. Don't know about particular models.

It's so bad, that a large portion of their plants are closed this week for inventory adjustment. Even the Caliber/Patriot plant is down this week!!

Thus, the employees not working this week just went from being paid by CG not to work, to getting unemployment. Bonus for CG!

Re: UAW Walks Out on Chrysler

maybe Chrysler will do to the UAW what GM could not! Bring the UAW (u are wieens) to their knees! I hope Chrysler makes the UAW into Bankruptcy and gets rid of the UAW from America!

Isn't there always a provision in the new contracts to compensate the workers for the monies missed during the strike (less unemployment benefits). In other words, in the end, don't the striking workers never truly suffer for going out on strike? I think I recall a few GM workers/UAW members boasting about that fact last week. So, is it true or not?

I wonder how Cerberus will fair with the Union. I bet a private company will be more agressive than the shareholder-pleasing Ford and GM.

Re: UAW Walks Out on Chrysler

I think this could be a tough one for the UAW. Chrysler is in a totally different position than GM. GM is improving their product mix over a number of years bringing out models much better than those they replace. Chrysler's product mix quite frankly, sucks and is in need of a major overhaul. I would expect Chrylser to drop models and consolidate and improve a core product mix. Translated - plant closings.
I forsee the Chrysler brand devoted to cars (Sebring, 300), a luxury xover (Pacifica) and a minivan (Town and Country). Dodge devoted to trucks and Jeeps to SUVs offering Liberty, Grand Cherokee and Wrangler. Nitro, Compass or Patriot, and Aspen will go.

It's not "so" bad. You're so dramatic sometimes.

Inventory days-to-sell:

GM: 67
Ford: 68
Chrysler: 72

And the Caliber had only a 58 day supply as of the 1st of September, so it's more than likely the extreme glut of Compasses that did that plant in.

Probably everything but the Jeep Wrangler.

The issue is that the Teamsters will probably stand with the UAW again, meaning dealer inventory is all there is. But then again, who really wants a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep anyway?
