Re: UAW threatens strike at Chevrolet Malibu plant
I just don't understand this. What the UAW looks at as leverage could be the last gasp of GM factories in North America. Can Chinese manufactured GM's be far away?

Re: UAW threatens strike at Chevrolet Malibu plant
Good find.
Here are the details from Automotive News email alert: UAW Local 31 has given General Motors a five-day strike notice that it will walk out at GM's Fairfax assembly plant Tuesday, April 22, unless local contract issues are resolved, said UAW Local 31 President Jeff Manning. The Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kan., builds the Malibu sedan. The 2,700 workers there do not have a local contract despite negotiations since GM signed its national contract with the UAW in September. GM spokesman Dan Flores said the automaker continues to bargain in good faith with local unions in several locations. " Our focus is on reaching new local agreements as quickly as we can," he said. Manning said the two sides have not been able to agree on seniority and other factory issues. He declined to be more specific. |

Re: UAW threatens strike at Chevrolet Malibu plant
Regardless of what the UAW does GM is going to get rid of its US factories as soon as they can unless the Government does something to give an incentive of manufacturing in the US(subsidize) or remove the advantage of manufacturing abroad (tariffs).

Re: UAW threatens strike at Chevrolet Malibu plant
If the dollar keeps falling and the Euro and other currencies keep gaining, why wouldn't you see a resurgence of manufacturing here?

Re: UAW threatens strike at Chevrolet Malibu plant
This is a very aggressive approach and it seems cruel on UAW's part. Taking advantage of a company who has some bad times. The fact that they are targeting the successful product at the company says a lot.

Re: UAW threatens strike at Chevrolet Malibu plant
It isn't targeting the sucseesful plants. It is targeting the plants where UAW and GM havne't come to an agreement to a local. GM still wants to make a product at that plant. They need to come to an agreement ASAP. UAW just has a little more pull if that plant has a hot product.

Like so many have said before, it really is no wonder US companies want to move production overseas. They don't have to deal with half the BS they do here and make more money also. ![]()

Re: UAW threatens strike at Chevrolet Malibu plant
And then in 12 to 24 months these same 2700 workers will be crying b/c GM will need to shutt down the plant and they will be out of jobs.
Instead of these workers being happy that they are working at a factory which makes cars that are hot in the market place...they want more and more and more. I am sooooooooooooo sick of the UAW! I just care about GM doing good in the market place and these fools are acting like this now that they have a hot product.

Re: UAW threatens strike at Chevrolet Malibu plant
The more they hurt GM, the less chance they have of keeping decent wages. If the UAW had any brains, they'd let their workers take pay cuts, then strike in the future when GM is loaded with money. But the way things are now, the UAW is just killing GM, present and future, and taken themselves with them.
