Update:UAW says 3 locals against GM deal so far, 9 for

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/10/05/f...w-gm-contract/
UPDATE: The Detroit News is reporting workers at the Romulus, MI engine plant have also rejected the UAW-GM contract by a narrow margin.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that workers at GM Powertrain's Massena, New York engine plant are the first to have rejected the proposed four-year labor contract agreed upon by UAW officials and General Motors. The members of UAW Local 465 chose to shoot it down by a margin of 172 to 137. They have good reason, though. According to the contract, the plant in which they work is scheduled to close in 2008. We're actually surprised 137 voted for the contract at all considering the document seals their fate.

UAW workers under GM's employ have until October 10th, another five days, to approve the contract, though only 13,000 out of 73,454 employees have voted so far. The rejection by the engine plant in Massena is not surprising, though we expect the contract will still be approved by a majority of the UAW rank and file. After that, the UAW moves on to negotiations with Ford and Chrysler, both of which are in a weaker position than crosstown rival GM and able to offer the UAW less.

Update UAW says 3 locals against GM deal so far, 9 for

Members of UAW local 2250 in Wentzville voted down a contract that would leave the future of their plant uncertain by making production of the plant's next-generation vehicles dependent on demand beyond 2012. Roughly 70 percent of the voters turned down the deal.

Earlier in the day, members of local 163 in Romulus, Michigan, also voted down the contract despite the automaker's promise to keep work at the plant. Local President Larry Long said he was unsure why more than 50 percent of those voters were against the deal.

Union members at UAW Local 465, which represents the engine factory in Massena, New York, voted down the contract on Friday, local President Tony Arquiett said. Under the tentative contract, that plant is scheduled to close in 2008.

Members of UAW local 1753 in Lansing, Michigan, backed the contract at about 60 percent, the local's president said late Friday.

UAW says two locals vote down GM contract

DETROIT (Reuters) - A United Auto Workers union local in Romulus, Michigan, is the second to reject General Motors Corp's tentative labor contract with the union, the local's president said on Friday.
Members of local 163 voted down the contract on Friday despite the automaker's promise to keep work at the plant. Local President Larry Long said he was unsure why more than 50 percent of the voters were against the deal.
Union members at UAW Local 465, which represents the engine factory in Massena, New York, also voted down the contract on Friday, local President Tony Arquiett said. Under the tentative contract, that plant is scheduled to close in 2008.

Re: First plant rejects UAW-GM contract

So what are the numbers as far as the 13,000 employees to vote so far? Is it close, like 7000-6000?

Uhhh no and ill tell you why, when i hired in around November 2000 they said we had no product after 2004 here it is 2007 and we have 50% of the market, they just dumped 50 million in stamping for new presses, were a highly productive plant that wins all kinds of awards, and the state of missouri will fight to keep it open for tax purposes we all know how hard they fought to keep hazelwood open; hell they made a special task force for that plant, this plant is only 20 years old and probably one of the youngest in GM's stable,, and ive talked to the plant manager and union chairman and they both say that if it is it will be shut down and re-tooled for a large car/suv, and also look at your source an angry Ford guy who was working in a 80yr old plant that had a younger more efficient plant making the same vehicles....its just scare tactics..

Re: UAW says two locals vote down GM contract

I think the workers are making too big a deal about the future product plan. Just because a product is not assigned for 2012 does not mean a particular plant will close. GM's near term product plans go out about 4-6 yrs. They have to try and juggle model changes with totally new product launches based on where they see future demand. Like, at what price point will the cost of gasoline push consumers to demand smaller cars; how many large sport utility trucks will be replaced by demand for smaller crossover SUV's; how will the Malibu impact sales of Saturn Aura or the larger Impala; will GM need more hybrid volume and if so what plants will have to be retooled; what if GM's market share declines by 4% over the next 3 yrs or if it should happily increase by 5% over the next 5 yrs, do you bring Oklahoma City assembly back online.

Come on people get a grip. It's ridiculous to think/expect GM to commit to a 20 year product timetable to preserve 73,000 jobs
