UAW locals so far favor GM contract

The United Auto Workers rank-and-file members so far approve of their new tentative contract with General Motors Corp.
Sharon Terlep / The Detroit News

In early voting on the deal reached last week, workers favor ratification by a 3-to-2 margin.

Ballots have been counted for six of nearly 50 UAW locals that will vote on the deal by Oct. 10. Ratification requires a majority vote. Locals that have voted comprise about 10 percent of GM's 73,000 UAW-represented workers.

Voting is voluntary. About two-thirds of eligible workers have cast ballots, say officials at the locals where voting is complete. The biggest ones to vote include Local 653 and Local 594, both in Pontiac. A sampling of results:

# Local 653, which represents workers at GM stamping, die construction and other facilities in and around Pontiac: 73 percent voted yes with 1,600 ballots cast.
  • Local 594, which represents General Motors' Pontiac East plant: 59 percent voted in favor of the deal with 1,912 ballots cast.
  • Local 730, Grand Rapids: 54 percent of production workers and 71 percent of skilled trades workers in favor.
  • Other votes: Local 652, Lansing (82 percent in favor); Local 1292, Grand Blanc (82 percent in favor); and Local 174, Romulus (70 percent to 80 percent in favor).

The approval comes despite tough concessions, including a two-tier wage system that pays workers in non-core automotive jobs as little as $14, about half the average pay of an hourly worker.

Yeah well the contract needs to pass. This contract still doesn't give up as much as what IUE gave up back in '93. That's not including what we gave up in '05. Then again if it fails that just means Moraine Assembly will get future products.

One local passed it by over 80% another passed by over 70%. Don’t listen to the nay-sayers. People who like to spread hate and discontent don’t want the truth to get in their way.

This is a historic contract and people who don’t support the union on this should quit and get a job at a non-union shop. Put your money where your mouth is!

Closing 15 plants across the nation though? Steep price to pay even without all the other give backs.

Who said 15 plants are closing?

I wouldn't put up with this garbage if I was you. Quit - that will show them. You can always work at a non-union job!

Well then they have to consider finding another job, Or moving to where they will be able to work.

I was thinking that the Deleware plant will close and production moved to Bowling Green. How much cheaper cost of living will be. I was also thinking this is a great time to buy a house in Bowling Green right before the rush of jobs. lol

I did this same senario since 1993....Ypsilanti Mich to Arlington TX for 3 years, Arlington to Spring Hill in 96......Cost of living In TN is alot cheaper than Mich and TX....Bowling Green is approx 80 miles away, but I'm staying put!

Re: UAW locals so far favor GM contract

My understanding of this contract is that GM told Ron explicitly as has ford if the contract is voted down they will move theire entire US manufacturing operations offshore within the next 4 years.

Just an FYI

Re: UAW locals so far favor GM contract

PS there is no intention to close 15 plants that is article spin and intrepretation by some news groups. Nowhere in the contract does it say that. The right to close plants based on market conditions is in there but unless the world goes to **** that ain't gonna happen.

PS union guys I'm behind you but don't let others people sway you. you need to think it through and do what is right for you and your family. don't let others outside of the company cause you to make a bad decision based on spite. Its your life not anyone elses.

Cosidering that this link shows how our competition works we didn't do all that bad. Globalization is killing off the unions. China's human rights record used to be reviewed annually. After the Clinton, yes CLINTON, push to give China the "Most favored nation" trading status on a PERMANENT basis regardless of their human rights record, corporations PERMANENTLY set up shop there.
