UAW, Chrysler in talks; strike possible

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071008/...gn0OwA2ySs0NUE
DETROIT - Negotiators with the United Auto Workers union and Chrysler LLC have made progress on efforts to reach a new four-year contract agreement, but the union has notified the company that a strike is possible, a person briefed on the talks said Sunday.

The union gave Chrysler a 72-hour notice of a potential strike, the person said, but it was unclear Sunday exactly whether the notice would end on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Bargainers working in committees made progress during the weekend but still have much work to do on difficult issues, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are private.

A strike notice could be a union tactic to put pressure on the company as the talks intensify, said Harley Shaiken, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley who specializes in labor issues

for some reason i dont see chrysler backing down. whether its because they dont care, they feel theyll hire temps instead, or because they know they cant, i dont know. but for some reason i dont see them faltering.

Funny how when the GM plants took their strike authorization votes in August it was all over the press.

Do no recall seeing any stories about Chrysler plants taking authorization votes.

Where there any stories?

I feel the same thing. I don't think the UAW understands that they are negotiating against a VERY powerful financial firm that could care less where Chryslers are built (or who builds them). They have cash to build where they want, and when they want (with the same, or better quality). Who knows, they might not find the business profitable enough due to the UAW and sell out to the Chinese. Everyone knows where that will lead.......

I think Nardelli might want to prove himself and since Chrysler was planning on shutting down I think 5 plants because of slow sales for about 4 to 5 weeks a strike wouldnt hurt them

Strike two, you're out? Although I suppose the first one was more of a foul tip.

Well Cerberus' investment is based upon the assumption that they can extract very significant concessions from the Union. I hardly think they will forget that because the Union is threatening a strike. Cerberus can afford to let the dealer lots empty out and absorb massive costs. The Union will embarrass themselves if choose a confrontation.

^ and I think the dealers would not mind that the production is halted since they have a lot of cars that have not been sold from 2006 yet

Does Chrysler have enough residual inventory to weather a pronouncned, long-term strike? Haven't they been running their plants almost 100% for years now?

They had an overall 72 day inventory as of September 1 - that's down from 81 days as of August 1.

But on the bright side, they could stop making Compasses today and still sell them for 106 days.
