Re: New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility

I live in the area and have toured the plant. These folks have bent over backwards and then some to help GM. They are as about as loyal and cooperative as a unionized work force could be. ISO9000, tiered wages, flexible and they build a good product. The factory is modern and as long as the assembly flow works it could produce almost any vehicle. GM has invested nothing in this product now it is outdated and dying. This is all due to the incompetence of the product managers and marketing types at GM. I think they will regret killing this product line.

I hope something good happens for these folks and the city/county/state Govts belly up the right kind of incentive package.

This segment has been drying up for years. I doubt they regret killing a 12-21mpg midsize SUV. It does nothing but perpetuate the gas-guzzling image.

I hate seeing people lose their jobs as much as the next guy, but we all know GM has too much manufacturing capacity and 50% market share isn't coming back. Just close the plant or rent it out/sell it to someone else as warehouse space. They can't keep it open just to keep workers building something. They aren't in the welfare business.

Re: New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility

Perhaps GM has learned from the difficulty of getting the Malibu up to speed and being forced to add a second plant.

I'm sticking with the Cruze and parts-wise, it would be near Lordstown.

I hope it happens, regardless of what the product is.

Re: New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility

Well I was thinking of posting this earlier in the day when it was first reported. I just didn't think that it was that news worthy (yet). Also if you remeber my post about GM holding us "Hostage", GM keeps on delaying and delaying contract talks. The thing that I keep on asking myself "Why does GM keep on delaying if it is just a plant closing contract"?

One thing to think about with Lordstown is look what is supposed to be going there Delta II (cruze) Gamma II, and pencieled in Alpha. 350,000 units a year is pushing a 1 plant capacity Unless if Lordstown turns into Multiple General Assembly's much like Oshawa Car.

I really hope that we get a new product. It isn't like I won't be fine and my depending on my job at Moraine. I will be fine if the plant closes, It is just that I will be much happier if it stays open. I will say this, This past 2 years has changed my outlook of my work at GM, And my outlook on how I spend my money. If you would asked me last year what I was going to do when we got a new product? I had the papers drawn up to build a house for $285k. Now If we get a new product I am going to stay in my house that I have own for 10 years that is a modest $100k home. (Even though I really want a 2nd bathroom lol)

This will go over well with the uaw since Moraine has a different union.

Re: New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility

I work at the plant and am hoping for a new product. I've heard on this site about the Lambda SUT and a Lambda based minivan. I don't know if these will be greenlit or not. Whatever GM wants we can do well!

Re: New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility

I agree with those that have said a possible second plant for the Cruze. If that car is as good as they say, there's no way Lordstown will be able to meet the demand for North America AND Europe, plus the Alpha and Gamma that are supposed to go there.

Well, so far I have not heard any plans for Toyota dropping the 4Runner, Nissan dropping the Pathfinder or Honda dropping the Pilot. Seems like GM can't make a viable minivan so they leave the market to Toyota, Honda, and Nissan; they can't make mid-size SUV so they leave the market to Toyota, Honda and Nissan; and never have made a great small car. If they are truely concerned about 12-21 mpg image then drop the Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, et al. GM has done nothing to update this line they just simply let it die.

If people need a big vehicle to haul, tow, whatever, they'll get a big BOF vehicle (Tahoe, Yukon, 'Burb), not a midsize. If you just want to carry 5 passengers with some cargo space, that's what lighter, more fuel-efficient CUVs are for.
