New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility
Ohio official: New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility
By Thomas Gnau Staff Writer Dayton Daily News Tuesday, August 19, 2008 DAYTON — General Motors Corp. is weighing an as-yet-unannounced vehicle that could be directed to Ohio — and perhaps Moraine — for production, Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher said Tuesday Aug. 19. Fisher said he and Gov. Ted Strickland met with GM decision-makers last week to try to persuade them to assign a new vehicle for production at GM's Moraine assembly plant, Fisher said after being taped for the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce cable television program "Business Connection." In June, GM said high gas prices and slow sales have forced the automaker to schedule for closure the Moraine plant and three other North American plants by 2010 or earlier. Fisher emphasized Tuesday that GM officials have stood by that announcement in discussions with state officials. But Fisher said also that GM has left open a possibility of a new assignment for the plant at Stroop Road and Kettering Boulevard. "I think it's fair to say it's an uphill conversation," Fisher said. "They have not completely ruled out the possibility of a new product in Moraine." Fisher said he could not speak in detail about one product in particular, other than to say a two-step process would be involved: Ohio must be selected as the state in which the product would be made, then Moraine must be selected as the production site. "Ohio must win the competition for the new product," Fisher said. In the taping of the chamber's "Business Connection" program, Fisher called that new product "a remote possibility" for Moraine. "We have to be realistic," said Judy Dodge, a Montgomery County commissioner who was also interviewed for the chamber program. "We have to be very realistic." Sharon Basel, a GM spokeswoman, declined to talk about any potential new GM products. "The GM executives made no promises whatsoever," Fisher said of his and Strickland's recent conversation with them. "But they didn't say 'No.' And until they say 'No,' we're going to keep pressing." Fisher also said the state was crafting a set of financial incentives for the automaker in case the company does find a new product for the Moraine plant. Basel said that no effort by the state to "partner" with GM would be considered a waste of time. SOURCE ![]()

Ahhhhh!!!
Yay! GM might still be in southwestern Ohio! Maybe it'll be that Chevy MPV we saw testing a few weeks ago...

I hope they find something top notch for them to build there. I don't like to see people lose their jobs.

Re: New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility
Actually, it is a big deal in the Dayton area because they have been hammered from Delphi and have a ton of other manufacturing jobs that are exiting the U.S. pretty quick. It seems that in Morraine there are not only a ton of suppliers for the Blazers, but also there seems to be a GM diesel plant and a whole bunch of other stuff that will probably fold up and leave, should GM leave. Dayton will be foreclosure central if GM leaves and they know it. Governor Strickland is going to lose a ton of tax monies if GM leaves Moraine.

Re: New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility
With the SRX leaving Lansing, could they move it to Morraine? According to an article I have read they want to sell about 40k of them a year. The Chevy MPV would be a good idea too. Heck you could probably use the same architecture too.

I heard both the SRX and 9-4x are being built at Ramos Arizpe.

Re: New GM-Moraine product 'remote' possibility
I'd like to see a new Trailblazer....but I hear that it's going to be very, very similar to the next Colorado, which will probably share a plant in Shreveport, Louisiana.
So what new products are possible here? |

Don't hold your breath.
If they are putting products on a boat to get to the mainland US, then it's probably built in China or Korea. |
