GM schedules downtimeBy Jim Leute ( Contact ) June 23, 2008 - 11:37 a.m. EMAIL RSS COMMENTS General Motors announced today that it will suspend production of full-size sport utility vehicles in Janesville for a total of 12 weeks through the end of this year.
Workers are scheduled for a two-week summer break for the weeks of June 30 and July 7. They had been scheduled to report to work on July 14 to start on shift production of the SUVs.
That decision changed Monday, when GM said Janesville workers will be temporarily laid off for the weeks of July 14 and July 21.
A GM spokesman, who attributed the shutdown to dwindling consumer interest in the big SUVs, said the plant will also have 10 more weeks of downtime through the end of the year. They they have not been scheduled yet
