GM will never make the Cobalt competitive. They just don't have it in them.

GM needs to sell as many of these as possible, and only offering 36 mpg with the manual won't do that.

Delta II and Gamma need to be home runs. Given the quality and desireability of GM's recent offerings, I hopeful they will be. Hopefully, these platforms went on diets and will get class leading fuel economy.

That is good news for the area. What is it about auto factories and slumping local economies though? It seems everywhere that you've got factories you've got nearby slums and crime.

I'm not talking about the '08 XFE. I'm referring to the '09 model year Cobalts which are getting an updated engine. We've heard the auto might be 35+ on the hwy and I've also heard the manual won't be available on the sedan anymore (hopefully not true). I'm curious what the city/hwy numbers are the '09 models. Hopefully city is more competitive.

It will be great when the automatics are closer to this next year. Right now they are significantly less efficient rated at 22/31 (4 speed).
My girlfriend and I were looking at a Pontiac G5 this weekend, driving a GT edition. I despise the 4-speed slushbox. Are they planning to put a 6-speed auto in next year or just an engine change? I felt so strongly against the auto that we decided to not buy the car right now. If they were to go 6-speed auto we'd probably buy one the moment the landed at the dealerships...

Thanks in advance,
-John K.

Here's a good one for you... Cardinale Way Pontiac here in Scottsale actually stuck an XFE emblem on the back of their G5 w/ the 5-spd manual. I asked if that was official and the sales mgr tried to tell me they had authorization from a regional GM guy, blah blah blah.

Good to hear positive news rather than the normal bad things that happen at GM daily.

I think the Cobalt has conservative good looks exterior wise. The interior isn't that bad for an entry level car.
