GM-union talks set to resume (Moraine GMT 360)

Quote:
MORAINE — How does a union negotiate a contract governing workers whose plant is expected to close?

Representatives of the International Union of Electronic Workers-Communication Workers of America will find out this week when they resume talks with counterparts from General Motors Corp.

Contract talks started at the Dryden Road IUE-CWA center last October. They're set to resume Tuesday, Aug. 5.

"There are uncharted waters," said Jim Clark, president of the IUE-CWA. "I don't think we've ever seen GM as unsteady as it is."

But there is still plenty to discuss between the two sides — including the possibility of transferring IUE-CWA workers to plants represented by the United Auto Workers, according to a union handbill. For example, the automaker's plant in Lordstown, in Northeast Ohio, is adding a shift and expecting a new GM product, the Chevrolet Cruze. The Lordstown plant is UAW-represented.

Gaylen Turner, president of IUE-CWA Local 798, noted that the GM-Moraine plant opened its doors to UAW members displaced by the closing of GM's Norwood plant in the Cincinnati area in the early 1990s. The question now is: Will the UAW open its doors to IUE-CWA members?

"We're not giving up as a union in trying to maintain a workplace and a facility over there," Clark said, referring to the Moraine plant. "A lot of things change."

What about an H3? But I do agree, they do need a Chevy variant, build it in LA and ship it around the world; I am sure they could build 300K of them for the world.

I've been saying that for years.

The new T370 chassis (Colorado/Canyon/H3) would be perfect for that. Let GM North American and Holden have the design input...sell it all over the world.

Re: GM-union talks set to resume (Moraine GMT 360)

I'd hate to see GM completely lose out on the Mid-Sized BOF SUV segment, they owned it when the Trailblazer/Envoy twins took the show back in '02? I wish they'd have an RS version for the Trailblazer SS, I really like the 4.2 inline six, but I'd like to have all the SS upgrades on the truck as well, sounds like quite a project for me though...But I do agree with the statement that there should be a global Trailblazer, it would do excellent in the Middle East, where they purchase high powered machines like they are going out of style.

Re: GM-union talks set to resume (Moraine GMT 360)

I just have the feeling that GM is going to regret giving up on this segment of the market so easily. I don't see Toyota shutting down the 4Runner, Nissan the Pathfinder or Honda the Pilot. Yes sales are slow but if a Tahoe/Yukon is not practical and you don't want FWD what GM product is there? This plant was paid for eons ago. They produced a good quality SUV and the workers bent over backwards to help GM. A little product updating and engine tweaking to get better mileage and the products would have been viable. We have only been in this "crisis" for about six months now - seems rash to shut down a whole product line.

Re: GM-union talks set to resume (Moraine GMT 360)

The TrailBlazer is global, but it's only available in LHD unlike the Blazer which was built in a RHD variant for the UK and Japan. As a matter of fact, the Iraqi police use lots of TrailBlazers. But, it's not globally competitive with it's OK off-road characteristics, old-school interior, big engines and aging styling. It needs a redesign and it needs to stay BOF. Has Toyota given up on the 4Runner/Hilux Surf?

Re: GM-union talks set to resume (Moraine GMT 360)

Yeah we build many of these GMT 360's that I have seen destinations for Saudi, Isreal, Russia, Kuwait, China. Then you have contries that don't have the best of roads and where BOF are really needed. More than likely GM will continue to build these but over in China at 30jph or something like that.

I would buy one to replace my Hilux...as long as the roof is not quite as high as the 4Runner (Prado) etc as I was not blessed with long legs but love to go surfing and I cannot get a board onto a Toyota Prado or Nissan Pathfinder easily.

As for the H3....not enough room in the back and no diesel.
