GM to cut 3rd shift at Delta Twp. plant

GM told workers today it will drop the shift after the Thanksgiving holiday at the plant that makes the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave crossover vehicles. The Detroit automaker has regularly touted those models as leading sales in its crossover segment.

Seems odd to me too. Maybe they have deemed it more profitable to not mess with the third shift and keep vehical supplies tight (at least on Acadia and Enclave).

They put the third shift on to satisfy the initial demand of the launch. Now they're scaling back. Nothing really newsworthy here...

Running two shifts is much more efficient from a monetary standpoint than cramming three shifts into a production day.

Not if demand allows for it. Having the plant run at capacity seems to be the most efficient: not idle time. And an idle factory makes no money.

I don't know the numbers as to how many GM sells or how much they can make at capacity but producing at capacity with demand not equal or above that capacity will mean losing money, instead of just not making it like shutting down a shift does. They must see a change in demand to warrant the cut.

The Economy in America continues to slow and vehicle sales will be hit more as time goes by. Im expecting all of the auto makers to be down next year even Toyota so cutting back production when you see sales going down in the future helps to keep production in line with demand.

This removes the need of a fire sale.

Re: GM to cut 3rd shift at Delta Twp. plant

Three shifts in a plant is never a good idea. You can do it short term, but it means that there is no down time. No time for regular maintenance. No time for simple cleaning. No available repair time for the eventual problems that all machinery has. Then when you do have the eventual breakdown, you have an entire plant sitting around doing nothing, and costing big dollars. It's MUCH more cost effective to run two shifts and extend the shifts with overtime. Even with time-and-a-half, it's a lot cheaper than hiring an additional shift.

It's possible that you could still see the same output from two shifts that you were seeing from three. Especially if the three shifts weren't building at capcity/shift to start with...

Well they could run all plants at full capacity with 3 shifts and later say happy rest of your lives w/out GM to all employees.

Evidently they have enough inventory of Acadia and Outlook so they can focus on ramping up Enclave inventories.

Re: GM to cut 3rd shift at Delta Twp. plant

It must be enormously complicated to add/delete a shift. With all the just in time deliveries, I'd think suppliers and truck drivers are affected too, unless they can stage enough of everything to supply a full shift without starving the start of the following shift.
