GM adding to layoffs at Janesville plant

GM adding to layoffs at Janesville plant

The Business Journal of Milwaukee

General Motors Corp. has notified state officials that it will lay off an additional 96 employees from the Janesville assembly plant as a result of a further "deterioration in consumer demand" for the pickup trucks and SUVs it produces.

In a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) letter filed with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, the automaker said the layoffs will begin around Aug. 25.

On April 28, GM announced that it was eliminating one shift of production at the plant beginning in July, resulting in the loss of 756 jobs. The plant, which has about 2,800 employees, will eventually be closed in 2010 as GM moves toward the production of more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The workers to be laid off are members of the United Auto Workers.

They are not going to put another vehicle in a plant that was built in 1919. As it is they already sold the Oklahoma City car plant which was only built in 1979.

They've all been significantly upgraded, so I'm not sure if that is the exact reason.

They are closing the Oshawa truck plant. Car plant will prosper.
