Nebraska: 60 million gallons of biodiesel per year from beef tallow

South Sioux plant will use beef tallow to make biodiesel

Quote:
SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- In a week's time, Beef Products Inc.'s plant in South Sioux City churns out about 22 million pounds of beef tallow.

That's a whole lot of fat. Soon, most, if not all, of it will be used to power semi-trucks, pickups and other vehicles that run on diesel fuel.

BPI, the world's largest producer of lean boneless beef, has teamed with a biodiesel producer, Natural Innovative Renewable Energy. The two firms on Friday formally unveiled plans for a 60-million-gallon-per-year biodiesel plant, expected to create three dozen new jobs.

The company hopes to start construction this fall or early next year, said Jim Venner, a Breda, Iowa-based consultant for the biodiesel project. After the startup, production could begin as early as 18 months later, he said.

The $100 million project would become Nebraska's largest biodiesel plant, and the first in the state to make the clean-burning, renewable fuel from animal fat.

Gov. Dave Heineman, who headlined Friday's groundbreaking ceremony, said he expects Natural Innovative Renewable Energy to help elevate the Cornhusker state's biodiesel industry to the same level as its corn-based ethanol production, which now ranks No. 2 in the nation.

Ever have fries cooked in beef tallow? McDonald's used to cook their fries that way way back when. Unfortunately beef tallow turns out to be quite unhealthy in terms of fat and cholesterol. That's why they moved away from it. But you can still find ma and pa places that still use it to cook their fries.

I wonder if the Green types who watch movies like Fast Food Nation will appreciate running their VW's on the byproduct of slaughterhouses...! Same goes for the turkey fat. On the other hand, waste not want not.

I think it was only around 10 years ago that they stopped using their beef tallow / cottonseed oil mix. I can't tell the difference, but I can tell a difference between the fries of different places, like Sonic vs. Burger King vs. McDonalds vs. Whataburger.

I miss the beef in the fries. It added flavor and I could feel my heart take a break everytime I went there.

I believe 10 years ago was the second time they had changed the oil. Anyway, I can tell the difference. They've done a fairly good job in trying to replicate the tallow, but it's not exactly right. The biggest issue for me is that they now have sort of an 'after taste' which I don't care for. McD's fries have gone from a must have to a merely acceptable.

I think was Kaiser Wilhelm that said: "There are 2 things the public should never see being made. Laws, and sausages."

What if I want to run my VW vegan style? Will there be requirements that pumps list the feed stocks for their fuel? I think the government should start labeling these right away! It is of vital importance. (I am of course being as sarcastic as I could possibly be).

The only vegan way is ethanol. No petroleum: animals died in its creation.
