GM refocuses on Volt, thinks 2010 sales are doable

GM refocuses on Volt, thinks 2010 sales are doable

GM wants its leadership back -- if not in sales, then in technology, and the Volt is going to do it. The General has put the car into the official production pipeline. Typically a 36-month process for GM, the car could go on sale as early as 2010, though no production date has been set.

Nice. I hope they dont rush it to much though, go through the details first and smooth it out before you hit production.

I'm guessing late 09 early 2010 depending on Batteries. If they build it I will buy one.

Well one thing Bob Lutz mentioned the other night (thanks for the link to the interview Ming) was that they are getting very good input from battery manufacturers for this car. He actually seemed surprised at the pace of development. This is very good news.

Refocus? That's a misstatement. GM has been focus on the Volt and never lost focus. Somehow, someone, somewhere has to knock GM. Some may say Toyota has been focus for years and years because they knew we'd need small car in the future. Well, guess what, they sold small cars because back then that's all they had. Why not knock Toyota instead for all their unfair trade practices.

This car is coming. Might be even sooner than 2010.

I would never buy this car but many eco-types will. It will boost GM's image and garner it praise from the press and environmentalists. This will raise sales all around and that's why GM needs to go full speed ahead.

I'd buy one, especially as a "city car" -- and I'm the furthest thing from a "eco-type" you can find. (My desire is to buy a Camaro, Z06, or G8 as soon as family considerations allow ) For in and around town, and even for longer trips, it would be quite useful. Our family has run on one large car for family outings and one small car for in and around town for years. This would be a perfect companion to the Enclave we intend on buying this fall.

And it will pull in a lot of customers looking for a funky, economical car. Something that uses no gas for short trips (<60km) would be a godsend not only to environmentalists, but even to folks like my parents who are looking for something that is more miserly with respect to fuel consumption. I showed my dad the Volt when it debuted in Detroit and he'd buy one. So I think this car will have mass appeal.

This is great news! If Volt can deliver even half of what they said at the car show debut it will be an over whelming success.
