Re: GM Plans To Market Volt Car In 2010 For Below $30,000-Report

I think GM is going to hit this just right.. Gas prices are going to boom this summer, going from $3.45 to $3.99 in a week in my area! Highest prices as been in my area. Gas prices are going to be over $4.00 a gallon.. people are going to flock to the Volt!

Actually since they tested it first in a Mali a few months back, I could see them adding it in a Mali quite quickly after the Volts introduction.

On a side note, I have 2 family members just waiting to buy one as soon as they can order one in. They drive to work less then 40 miles, so all in all I can see this car being a runaway success.

With the current Prius at about $25k - under $30k for the Volt would be a steal.

It'll buy one for $30k as long as there is no $5k+++ markup.

My Lease on the Trailblazer should be up right at that time. Then my wife can drive the Envoy. If I still have a job at GM at that time, My round trip to work is 36 miles. My wifes round trip becuase she is a teacher in the school district we live in a whopping 2 miles a day round trip.

I have heard they might only sell in certain areas for the first year (Los Angeles, New York, etc.)

This is because supply will be low, and they will have to train dealers to do work on this car with the high voltage and whatnot.

But you can probably get one in 2011 or 2012.

Re: GM Plans To Market Volt Car In 2010 For Below $30,000-Report

I do plan on buying one as my next car. If it were to sell at around 40k, it would be out of reach for me.........and many other people who want an extremely fuel efficient car. Bringing that down to around 30k puts it more into reach for people like me.

At the price, the car will without a doubt sell out with dealerships having a tough time keeping it in stock for years to come.

So will they be selling at a loss then?
Probably still a good thing. The Volt needs to be affordable.

For a few months that would be OK but not for a year. GM has its best market share in the heart of the US, not on the coasts and they don't need to neglect their most loyal customer base no matter how bad they need to cater to the coastal areas which have defected to the imports in greater numbers over the years. Maybe they are ahead of schedule and will roll it out to LA, NY, etc. earlier in 2010 and the rest of the country will get it in Nov. 2010? We'll see.

You know that is a very good point. Depending on how one uses the car, the engine might see very little usage or quite a bit. An hour (or Hobbs) meter would give a person some idea of engine usage.

One thing I really like about E-flex is the option to utilize a different power plant be it gas, diesel, or a fuel cell. Options are nice.

Re: GM Plans To Market Volt Car In 2010 For Below $30,000-Report

At $30,000 what excuse is there for most people NOT to buy one? $4-5 gas and the car has room for 4. GM should be making this sedan, a coupe and a crossover. Do that and they'd sell 300,000-400,000 a year easy if it's under 30 (if they could make that many).

I'm planning on buying one as long as it's under $35,000. Much more than that, and I don't think I can justify it for the "techiness" and fuel-savings. Even if it gets us closer to ridding us of foreign oil (still love you Canada and Mexico), I can't spend $40,000 for a car right now.

BTW, this HAS to be one of the most Marketing researched car ever at GM. If they get it wrong by overpricing it or under-producing, because some Marketing guy told them the best answer is $39,000 and 80,000 vehicles, someone should be fired. The worst case scenario is they price it too high, and they only end up selling 50,000 and think it's a huge success, because it's "such a new technology and product." BS. They better be planning on changing the industry with this thing.

Ain't likely to happen with whats happening to commodity & raw material prices as we speak.

Thats not just about oil or energy driven increases. Its about things like steel or really iron and coke, and basically most of the metals group although aluminum seems to be going its own way.

I want to be clear; none of the above reflects poorly on GM.

I don't know. If buyers wish to keep from getting ripped off at the lot, they need to make their deposits with a written contract not to exceed MSRP.

Somehow, I doubt the "me firsts" are gonna have that much intelligence, however.

The genset engine in the Volt will be a flex fuel engine. Use E85, and you'll actually be using LESS petroleum fuel than with B20 biodiesel.
