Thank you for linking to a technically-oriented report on work at UT Austin. I will point out to you that the reported breakthrough is not the production of either alcohol or hydrocarbons. The breakthrough is the use of cyanobacteria to produce sugar. The harvested sugar can then be used to produce alcohol.

It is not at all clear that the Algenol uses the same process, but the UT Austin process appears to be a good thing.
