$4.00 Gas A Reality

Orlando station charges $4 for a gallon of gas
By WKMG Local 6 News
Originally posted on April 23, 2007

ORLANDO -- The average price of gasoline may have jumped through the U.S. but nothing like the spike seen at a gas station near the airport over the weekend.

The Problem Solvers found a Chevron gas station in Orlando near the airport charging $4 for a gallon of regular.

"I was shocked," motorist Cindy Confer said after purchasing $4 gas. "I was thinking we should have gone down the road."

"You didn't stop to look before you started pumping?" Local 6's Mike DeForest said.

"I looked out here," Confer said.

Local 6 reported that the prices were not put on any signs at the business.

The station was also selling Plus gas for $4.09 and charging $4.19 for premium gas, the report said.

Gasoline at $4 Coming to a Pump Near You, Unfazed by Rising Tab
By Joe Carroll

April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Whether it's $50 to fill up your Prius or $130 for the Ford Expedition, $4-a-gallon gasoline is coming to a pump near you.

Fuel prices are rising at a pace not seen since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita knocked out a third of the U.S. oil refining industry in 2005. Gasoline consumption is climbing twice as fast as last year and will accelerate when summer travel begins late next month.

``What we're surprised by is the increased demand,'' said James Mulva, chief executive officer at ConocoPhillips, whose refineries from California to New Jersey produce 56 million gallons of gas a day, enough to meet 14 percent of the country's needs. ``Even though the price of gasoline is up, the demand is up,'' he said in an April 12 interview in Houston.

Population gains and U.S. economic growth are causing an increase in fuel purchases, according to Orlando, Florida-based AAA, the nation's largest organization for motorists. The U.S. economy will expand at a 2.4 percent annual pace in the second quarter, up from 1.8 percent in the first three months, according to the median estimate of 74 economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Gasoline use is rising almost 5 percent above the five-year average.

Americans are resigned to higher prices, says David Pursell, a principal with Pickering Energy Partners, a consulting firm in Houston.

``Last year, we had pump prices well over $3 for the summer and gasoline demand was up,'' Pursell said in an interview. ``Would $4 gasoline cause demand contraction? I think it will, but I also thought $3 gasoline would.''

Re: $4.00 Gas A Reality

scary.....but puts more demand into oil exploration, which gives me job security.

Too bad more of my check goes to buying gas, like everyone else. It's time for a baby duramax for smaller trucks, like the 1/2 ton silverado/Sierra, H3, Colorado/Canyon, and the Tahoes/Yukons.

Re: $4.00 Gas A Reality

I returned a rental car to the Orlando International airport last month. I stopped at a gas station just north of the Airport (less than a mile directly north) and gas was almost a full dollar more there than it was just the day before when we filled up 20 or so miles away in Orange city.

Re: $4.00 Gas A Reality

And I just posted yesterday that I felt that gas prices would push over the $4 mark this summer.

What will gas prices settle at over the course of this summer

I can only hope it doesn't head towards $5.

Re: $4.00 Gas A Reality

You would prbably expect the price of gas to be a little higher near an airport. With people filling their tanks prior to returning their rental cars.

Re: $4.00 Gas A Reality

It's bad, but not bad enough for anyone to do anything about it. I wonder when it will actually be bad enough for people to start demanding at least tax repeals. Uncle Sam currently takes about 55 cents a gallon for taxes between state and federal. I'm sure if we start demanding that to go away the gov't would step and take a look at the situation a little harder.

Price is determined in large part by what the market will bear.

Demand is up. People keep buying mega-SUVs and 4000 pound cross-dressers to haul little Jimmy to school 2 miles away or 7 passenger vehicles that can tow a small house - to commute in. ConocoPhilips is only glad to take your money as demand increases. Keep buying your big thirsty vehicles. Oil execs approve.

"You can afford it".

Re: $4.00 Gas A Reality

Gas prices are the biggest load of crap since Clinton said he didn't have sex with that woman. No one is doing anything to change them and they provide as many excuses for why they're going up. I can understand paying the price because of the great demand we exhibit, but when the companies tout their profits as if it were normal practice, then it isn't much wonder people are beginning to become disgusted.

But people ARE doing something about it. They're shifting away from big trucks and SUVs and towards fuel efficient cars. Hence Toyota/Honda make more money each month while the big and stupid 2.5 lose money and market share. And what do we hear from Lutz? Gotta-have, Zeta and bitching about fuel economy standards. I guess Bob and Rick will be happy if things go on as they have with no tightening of government mandated fuel economy standards. But, if things go on as they have, GM/Ford/Chrysler will be bankrupt by 2010 and it won't be the fault of regulations. It'll be the fault of head-in-the sand management and comatose boards and shareholders.

I would think that we are not too far away from $4.00 per gallon. It will get to the point that soon, people won't be able to afford to go to work.

Re: $4.00 Gas A Reality

It's ranges about $2.73 to $2.86 in my part of the country for 87 octane. Don't see demand for GM trucks slacking off in this region. I see brand new Silverados and Sierras daily.

Re: $4.00 Gas A Reality

Down to $2.82 at a nearby station. Diesel is dropped below Premium now. They find one station gouging people and then call that the trend. Too bad some of you fall for that.
