so who thinks toyota's been dumping the camry, corolla, etc?

the tundra aint on the list either.
While Toyota probably has done some more fleeting than they did 5-10 years ago, my first bet for who is picking up the slack, especially in the rental fleet (Avis/Hertz/etc...) area would be Hyundai. With all the deals/offers/buyback things they have goin on their retail sales, I can only imagine what they might be offering on the fleet side of thing.

While I agree that the reviews haven't been that great, and I am certainly not assuming the Cruze will be "the best car EVER!!!" like some, it is worth noting that we are getting a whole new engine/drivetrain, so any performence/fuel economy ratings are basically irrelevant. Hopefully GM will listen to the complaints on everything else and make a few changes to the interior and suspension in order to have a better overall package for the US release next year.

As a group of slots, the top twenty YTD are down slightly less ( - 33.5 % ) than the industry total of ( - 35.1 % ) for YTD so the non- top twenty are definitely down more as a group.

Over all : Brutal.
What no:

Continental
Plymouth
Oldsmobile
DeSoto
Packard
Tucker

These are great cars and no one bought any? I love the Edsel....

The reason that this is important to look back over a 2 year period is because last year was under circumstances and this year is also under circumstances however are different. Fuel prices being high creates a circumstance where consumers look for more fuel economic vehicles while gas prices have been pretty low due to the poor economy and the credit crisis has most likely taken an even chunk out of sells. With the lower gas prices altering the balance, however even with gas prices lower trucks have still suffered more then compacts and we must remember that the Cobalt for example is about to get replaced by the Chevy Cruze and the Focus isn't the best car out there.

Its like when the big 3 had their employee discount sales which greatly inflated their sales figures then the next year they had to compare to greatly inflated sales figures. So looking at the year before was more telling about what the sales trends are and in this case the sales trends are that trucks are being hit harder then compacts.
You don't think the fact that those trucks cost about twice the $$$ as those cars has anything to do with those numbers?

What is wrong with people flocking to trucks? We wouldn't want American consumers preferring the one segment where the US auto industry clearly has an advantage, would we??

You must be from California, the most anti-American region in the whole world! I am starting to think they are even worse than the French!

To all of the anti SUV people in the world I offer this lesson.
This last holiday weekend I had the following vehicles in use almost simultaneously: a 35 foot motorhome getting 7mpg pulling a trailer with 2 quads, a 21 foot boat getting worse than 7mpg that was pulled by a Suburban getting 11mpg when trailering, daughter following in my 66 Catalina that gets 11mpg not counting burnouts and doughnuts, riding tractor, lawn mower (for the tight areas), weed whacker, chainsaw, pressure washer, and a gas edger. All of these burn gasoline.

I figure the more people try to push America out of large vehicles the more I will burn gasoline to "Offset" all of those econo-buzz-boxes that are so popular in California.

Until they legislate me out of my preferences, I will stand defiant! (All the while supporting America by buying those things that are built here or result in the greatest profit for Americans and their corporations)

Maybe....but overall, I'm predicting a typical Daewolet product: Just as lame as the American designed small Chevrolets, but less reliable.

My impression from the GM/Chrysler releases is that fleet sales are down because fleets aren't buying, not because they aren't selling. And you can be sure GM isn't holding back dead nameplates like Pontiac G6 from the rental lots.

Camry/Corolla declines are pretty consistent with the market as a whole, so I don't see the evidence they are fleet dumping.

Looks like you found something positive out of all those negative numbers. Way to go.

Re: USA: Top Twenty selling Nameplates thru June 2009 Ytd

Did you catch this other thread started by TuffG929 ?

http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f...e-sales-81528/

From the lead link - under Mike Levine,

Quote:

In the light-duty segment, most domestic half-ton pickups increased their market share at the expense of Nissan and Toyota.

The Chevrolet Silverado’s slice grew from 31.5 percent to 32.4 percent, continuing its reign as the best-selling half-ton pickup truck in the U.S. at 119,959 units sold.

That’s probably news to some readers because, as we mentioned earlier, monthly sales figures announced by the manufacturers aggregate sales of light- and heavy-duty pickups but some news outlets incorrectly report the F-150 as the best-selling vehicle (and pickup) when they are really reporting total F-Series sales.

< That commonly miss reported total includes a second error in that all the medium duty trucks ( F450, F550 etc ) as well as the HD PU F250 & F350 >

The F-150 was able to increase share from 28 percent of the half-ton segment to 29.1 percent.

The all-new Dodge Ram 1500’s sales results deserve some special recognition.

It bucks the conventional wisdom that new truck buyers wouldn’t want a Chrysler product while the company was going through bankruptcy and receiving bailouts from the federal government, -

- and that core truck buyers prefer extra hauling capability over ride comfort.

The Ram 1500 uses rear coil springs instead of conventional leafs that provide a much smoother unloaded ride but keep hauling and towing ratings the same as the old Ram 1500.

The result: Ram 1500 market share increased the most of any half-ton pickup, from 13.6 percent to 15.8 percent.

That 2.2 point jump is twice as much as the increase the new F-150 was able to carve out.

GMC, Toyota and Nissan all lost share, with Toyota dropping the most.

The Tundra saw 3.2 points of market share evaporate in the first half of 2009 while the Sierra 1500 and Titan lost one-half point each.

Half-Ton Truck Winners: Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge
Half-Ton Truck Losers: Toyota, Nissan, GMC

Did you know v6 rav-4s, and Saturn Vues are wicked quick? What I find amusing is people that buy an SUV when they really wanted a minivan. You give up most of the economy and space and gain very little "style".
