Indeed. It represented a time when Detroit was a little more serious about being competitive. I think we may finally be returning to those days.

I don't know about anyone else, but I find it pretty pathetic that the four top-selling cars in this country by a very comfortable margin are from Toyota and Honda. This needs to change.

The single biggest market segment is if memory serves me right mid size sedans followed by compacts.

Consider this, the top 20 account for about 50% of all sales so far for this year and the only full size pickup truck that isn't on this list is the Nissan Titan, so 25% of 50% = 12.5%.

So based on this rough guess the full size pickups are around 12.5% of the total US market right now............

For reference at the turn of the century the full sized pickups made by 3 manufacturers accounted for approximately 2.5 million sales annually. This year with 5 makers that segment will account for less than half that number.

And if wouldn't have if Ford had needed that money to stay afloat, to survive you know. Ford got that money because the government saw fit to loan it to them not because they begged for it. Also keep in mind that Ford is not going to repay this loan with worthless equity but with hard earned cash . . . so maybe the whole thing shouldn't have flown under the radar after all.

You are mixing best selling vehicles and the best cars, aside from F150 none of those in heydays were great, reliable or appealing products. Be honest and say that any of those would be your choice considering design, quality and appeal?

With that logic Coke, Oreos and Big Mac would be the best food you can get just because the herd is buying them around the globe?

How was the Silverado 2nd when it sold 8,561 less than Camry/Solara? Maybe the ranking originally didn't include Solara? Or it's simply an error..
That 3rd column number might be full-year rankings (January-December).... if so, it would really serve no purpose whatsoever in a mid-year (January-June) sales chart other than confusing things. I just look at the actual numbers that matter.

They should at this point kill the Impala or let the Impala be the fleet queen and allow the Malibu to reduce its fleet sales.

At the same time though they should replace the 2.4L with the 2.4L direct injection and the 3.6L with the 265BHP 3.0L V-6 engine. This should give a fuel economy boost for both the I-4 engine and the V-6 engine to give an extra incentive to get the Malibu.
Yeah I would kill the current Impala and make the G8 the new Impala for the next 3 years. GM all we need here is a grille and labeling changes on the exterior and interior.

Ahem! This thread is about best sellers, not best cars. I think you are the one who is confused! Why would I be supposed to be talking about best cars in a thread about best sellers?

And if we ARE to be honest, yes the F-150 would still be in the list of best cars, as wellas the first gen Taurus which was a damn good car, they both sold in those crazy numbers for a reason . . . but a list of really good cars of the mid 80s through 90s would be filled with the BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes of those days.

What's I find amusing is people who buy small SUV's with V6 engines. You give up most of the capability and gain very little economy.

RAV4 21mpg
Escape 20mpg
Enclave 18mpg

Suckers.

Your comment sounded like "Ford now and then" i.e. those days when Detroit 3 churned out literally crap load of vehicles with poor designs and abysmal quality to compete in sales figures but then lost it, especially with cars, by Corollas/Civics or Camrys/Accords/Altimas for a good decade. I would not call those days as good days, more like beancounters triumph vs. loyal customers. This result is more respectable, those days were beginning of their demise.

Fair enough. I guess my comment was a follow up to another comment about sales . . all good though.

I still think that the F-150 of the day as well as the first gen Taurus were vehicles that the competition couldn't touch and the public responded. It was a phenomenon beyond loyalty, it was good product . . .

Glad to see no one wants trucks and have been forced to buy them all this time. I guess F150 being #1 just shows that everyone is waiting with baited breath for that great $50K electric car we are all dreaming of. Never mind that Europe is focused on great diesels...the US hate diesels and would rather invest in pipe dreams.

Nothing wrong with that. The government should be giving them money if they are going to enforce the ridiculous fuel economy standards.
