Trucks are big again, and other Oct. 2009 sales news -- w/top-20 sellers list

Quote:

Full-size pickup trucks from Ford and General Motors once again grabbed the two best-seller positions last month, and most saw their sales rise compared to October 2008.

With the post- Cash-for-Clunkers bust over and sales figures being compared to a period of slowdown a year ago, the auto industry is seeing numbers that look much more positive than those in months past.

Of the six best-selling automakers in the U.S., five either saw small sales gains or effectively held steady compared to this time last year -- only Chrysler bucked the trend to shed a further 31 percent of its sales.

And for almost everyone who sells them, large highly-profitable trucks are once more returning respectable sales figures...

I wouldn't put too much stock in this. When you put it in perspective you have to consider the following:
  • 1. GM held their Truck Month promotion in October which put heavy incentives on the hood
  • 2. Gas hit $4/gal in 2008 and the market took a nose dive. so the comparison to last year will automatically be favorable
  • 3. At this rate the would be on track to sell around 90,000 Tahoes (if they sold around 7,500 units/month for all of 2009) which is almost identical to last year and very far from their peak of 209,000

The truck market might be showing signs of stabilization and recovery, but I woudn't pop the bubbly just yet.

holy crap the dodge ram plummeted. didnt expect that. wheres the tundra??? (sorry, had to throw that one in).

the month over month is more significant. ford and gm both had truck month promotions sure, but they had them last year as well. and a 6k vehicle increase month to month is pretty large either way. as much as people want to deny it, people love trucks. its just the way it is. and they will find any excuse to own one.

True, there are those who need trucks, want trucks, and always will buy trucks. But, you could hardly call this a return to the good old days.

All the more reason that GM and Ford need to regularly update their trucks... and drive Asian-branded trucks out of the market.

On a sober note, that Asian brands rule #3 - #11 on the sales charts is frankly embarassing. Absolutely pathetic that GM and Ford have handed the car market over to Japan. I hope it causes as much-and more-discomfort for Detroit, and, more importantly, that they actually do something to address it!

Agreed... And on the trucks, imagine what GM could do in sales if they really tried and built the best truck they possibly could. I can't wait for the new Silverado next time around.. I hope they get it right this time.

Listen to this guy - actual facts might clash with your vision of the world, but they remain facts.

Re: Trucks are big again, and other Oct. 2009 sales news -- w/top-20 sellers list

As stated already comparing year over year sells doesn't always get you the most accurate results as special circumstances may exist this month or the same month a year ago which in this case both are true.

Gas prices were really high last year and this year GM had its truck month which had heavy truck incentives.

Though we may be seeing the truck market stabilizing.

Boy, we have clear FACTS/NUMBERS right here showing the popularity of trucks in this country, and some folks hate it so badly that they REFUSE to acknowledge that popularity.

The number 1 & 2 sellers are big trucks, PERIOD.

All the anti-big vehicle hatred in the world will NOT change those FACTS, if you hate that trucks/big vehicles are popular in America, oh well too bad. Your hatred won't stop making them popular, so just deal with it.

Trucks/big vehicles are popular in this country, PERIOD.

Re: Trucks are big again, and other Oct. 2009 sales news -- w/top-20 sellers list

It should not be a shock that a truck is in the top 2 spots of the 20 best selling vehicles in the US last month.......

This is due to the lack of choices with full size trucks....

you have the Nissan Titan (which doesn't sell well) the Toyota Tundra (which doesn't sell well) and the dodge Ram (which doesn't sell well) and you have the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra (good sellers)

However if you look at the market segments to see which one is top dog in America full size trucks are in the number 3 (or 4) spot. Mid size sedans and compacts are above trucks as far as market shares go (CUVs may be ahead of trucks). This is an example of taking a statistic and making it say what you want it to say in order to support a pre-existing ( might get dropped by the health insurance industry) ideology.

When GM and the other big 3 had their employee discount programs some people actually went YAY while others look at this with serious concern. Then those who went YAY went damn when the US auto industry had to compare its sells to a year ago levels when they had the employee pricing. Lets look at all of the facts first before we go YAY.
