Yeah, new model, gas at 4 bucks a gallon, everyone leaving the truck segment.

Makes sense to me.

But the Focus's increase is due to fleets... you're contradicting yourself.

What I see in my area is pretty representative of the Canadian market as a whole (if I look at sales vs. what I sight IRL), it rarely differs.

Of course I'm more prone to seeing small cars as I'm in Quebec, but whenever I cross I see equally as many new Corollas.

I said that?

In April and early May I was only seeing new Focuses as fleet vehicles, and now I don't, but I *KNOW* that part of the Focuses are going to fleets for certain. While I have yet to see a fleet or rental company with new Corollas. Hell, they never had the old one).

Basically the Focus surge has always been due to its combination of fuel economy (eh, IRL the Duratecs aren't that great) and tech (SYNC).

They had tens of thousands of the old one. It was about 12-15% fleeted.

Re: Toyota's May 2008 Sales: Down 7.9%

Trucks took a dump. This is going to hurt Toyota a little as it will take longer for them to recover their investment. GM at least had one more year to get the return (but they needed it).

Availability?
I saw once a Corolla and a Yaris from a local rental agency in Sherbrooke, with some Hyundai as well

Didn't say the Focus' increase was due to fleet sales.

You're misinterpreting what I'm saying here.

New or old? Not quite surprised by the Yaris as all restaurants with delivery fleets have them.

Yeah, after verification the Hertz near the Gatineau airport has one.

But I don't think it would account for a 20K sales increase... Not even a 10K, or 5...

and where do you know this because Jim Farley said the contrary

Our dealers are selling the Focus at unprecedented turn rates," said Jim Farley, Ford group vice president, Marketing and Communications. "In fact, Focus' retail sales were 91 percent of beginning inventory, which puts it in the same league as the industry's best-selling small cars. This is a strong statement about customer demand for Ford's newest small car."
that means that only 9% of total focus sales went to fleet

Check GreenHybrid.com, Yahoo Prius or Priuschat.com.....

The sudden surge of buyers in April and May snapped up every unit in the country by May 15th. There are none left unsold and typical waiting lists at every dealership are 20-50 deep again.

Part of the problem is that Toyota also got blindsided by the sudden demand as they were winding down the 08s as they began to build the 09s last month. They actually lost 10-12 days of sales in May because there were no vehicles to sell ( note the HUGE number in April ). They will probably lose some sales in June and July due to limited supplies as well.

Waiting lists 20-50 deep, full-sticker-or-no-sale pricing and ADDs in some spots for a vehicle 4-1/2 yrs old ending it's lifecycle next summer.

What you see in your area is irrelevant when talking about sales success. What you happen to recall having seen is subjective and highly imperfect, and is obviously subject to conscious or sub-conscious biases about what you are looking for.

Mine was a satirical/sarcastic remark to his reference about the Focus being a fleet queen. The Focus's increase is most certainly not going to fleets.
