Any American that cheers Toyota on, (I am not talking about discussing product merit) I am talking, rejoicing when Toyota outperforms Ford or GM, needs their head examined.

I wasn't cheering at all, especially for a 3% loss. But I think it's hilarious how Toyota gets laughed at for having a bad month (in a bad economy, no less), when GM is no better and was almost to the brink of extinction. And just as you have a right to cheer GM on, poeple have a right to cheer Toyota on if they chose to do so.

I know Toyota has issues....where did I say in this thread that they were perfect? And all the things I quoted in that first post were in the past for Toyota as well...but it's ALWAYS brought up as an example that Toyota is going to crash and burn tomorrow.

Except we're cheering for gm on a gm fansite. Not cheering for gm on a toyota fansite... So yea expect some people to trash talk the competition on a FANSITE.

All companies are in the same economy, so thats not a valid reason to give toyota an excuse.

yeah Buick has three models vs about 10 for Lexus. Honestly you have to combine Cadillac and Buick to match up with Lexus sales because Lexus competes with both. RX and ES compete with Buicks while the rest competes more with Cadillac.

I'd love to see Toyota go down in flames, but, you can say those GM issues are in the past but they really aren't. I still remember the bill to get my intake manifold fixed and just recently I was in at the dealer getting my recall done to keep my GP from catching on fire. Just because they were sold in the past doesn't mean there aren't GM owners out there right now getting pissed at GM for costing them money on something that should have been fixed by GM several model years before their car was built. GM has a huge uphill battle ahead of them to win back customers, some will never come back.

I have no issue with people celebrating Toyota's down times but lets not forget GM's own reality or try to deny it.

I can't wait for Buick to add to their lineup and gain some market share. The Regal will be a nice addition.

Well, why does it bother you when you know it's going to be brought up? It's like when Mgescuro went ballistic because someone degraded Cali, yet again, last week. I mean, who cares?

You know it's going to come up, just like I expect someone to use your response at GM, or how I believe that Simon Says (sorry Simon ) has actual Ford colored pom poms and uses them, like non-stop.

It's the one trick pony trolls that need to be dealt with. But when the mob hits (for a thread like this), just keep going dude.

A sales slide despite this:

Incentive spending soars for Asians
Hyundai-Kia, Toyota, Nissan jack up spiffs; GM, Ford hold back

Jesse Snyder
Automotive News | October 12, 2009 - 12:01 am EST

Three of the top four Asian automakers have poured on the incentives this year, while General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. are exercising restraint.

The highest percentage increases compared with 2008 have come from Hyundai-Kia, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. and Nissan North America, says consumer auto site Edmunds.com. Ford and GM have raised incentives by the lowest percentages compared with last year.

The Detroit 3 have spent the most on spiffs since Edmunds.com started tracking cash for consumers and dealers along with subsidies on sales and lease financing in 2002.

Higher spiffs
Average 2009 U.S. per-vehicle incentives through September, compared with 2008 averages.
Avg. incentive Change
1. Chrysler Group $4,584 18%
2. GM $3,796 6%
3. Ford Motor Co. $3,451 2%
4. Hyundai-Kia $2,998 40%
Industry (all manufacturers) $2,835 10%
5. Nissan North America $2,511 19%
6. Toyota Motor Sales $1,620 22%
7. American Honda $1,310 9%
Source: Edmunds.com

Asians up their game

But the old spending patterns are changing, says Jessica Caldwell, an Edmunds.com senior analyst.

GM, Ford and Chrysler Group still spend the most among the seven major U.S. auto groups. But Hyundai-Kia now spends more than the industry average, Nissan is close to that level, and Toyota is spending nearly double what it did in 2007.

"Hyundai-Kia is going after market share very aggressively," Caldwell says.

The Korean brands have boosted their combined market shares to 7.4 percent this year from 4.8 percent in 2007. Over the same period, incentive spending soared 61 percent, to $2,998 from $1,861 per vehicle.

Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's sales boss, says incentive spending has risen as the brand has added higher-priced models to the lineup.

"We want to reduce our incentive spending in the fourth quarter," he says.

Toyota's spending jumped 90 percent between 2007 and this year, to an average of $1,620 per vehicle from $853. The company's incentive outlay this year is up 22 percent over 2008.

"Toyota is having a really hard time dealing with the downturn," Caldwell says. "They've not been hit this hard before, and they're new in the truck market, so incentive spending is up."

Nissan North America's per-unit incentive spending jumped to $2,511, up 19 percent over its average for all of 2008.

Caldwell says a few big Nissan models carry heavy incentives, such as the Murano crossover and Titan pickup.

Chrysler spends big

Chrysler's average per-vehicle U.S. incentive this year is $4,584, the highest among the seven largest automakers and up 18 percent from its 2008 average, says Edmunds.com. By contrast, Ford incentives are up 2 percent from a year ago, and GM's are up 6 percent.

As Chrysler struggles to reverse a 40 percent sales decline this year, it can't escape high incentives, Caldwell says.

American Honda Motor Co. has been able to keep its U.S. incentive spending the lowest of the major players because it is less truck-dependent and its smaller lineup is easy for consumers to understand, Caldwell says.

"It's more car-based," she explains. "You don't have to rely on incentives so much when the lineup is simple."

Industrywide, manufacturers have boosted incentive spending 10 percent over 2008, says Edmunds.com. Through September, the industry's cost has jumped by $269, to $2,835 per vehicle.

Gm had a better month than Toyota.

Gm sells more vehicles here than Toyota

Gm's bankruptcy makes Toyota's performance that much worse since many "experts" predicted GM would see massive defections after emerging from Chapter 11.

Re: Toyota October 2009 Sales Down 3.5%

How do you explain the AP article that quotes Toyota as saying their sales have INCREASED less than 1% over Oct 2008? See below:

DETROIT (AP) - GM reported its first monthly gain in U.S. sales in almost two years while Toyota and Ford also improved, a sign the auto industry it starting to crawl back from a yearlong slump.

Demand for new cars and crossovers in October fueled better results for General Motors Co. and Detroit rival Ford Motor Co. GM's sales rose 4.7 percent from October 2008, while Ford notched a 3-percent gain. Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp. said its sales edged up less than a percent. Less rosy news came from Chrysler Group LLC, whose sales fell 30 percent, though they improved from September.

Not forgetting anything, but I like perspective. And I understand and have empathy (which is rarer than eclipses for me) for your W-body issues because you do own a car from when GM was acting like a bunch of F-ups.

But I see where GM has gone from in a short few years and am impressed. I no longer feel like it's a round of Russian Roulette when buying a car, and I was lucky back then. Nothing like looking at how long into a life cycle to determine what car you'd look at...

You know, like waiting until the last two or three years to feel safe...
