October 2009 Ford Sales: Up 3%

NEW PRODUCTS DRIVE FORD’S OCTOBER SALES, SHARE GAINS

* Ford, Lincoln and Mercury October U.S. sales totaled 132,483, up 3 percent versus a year ago and 21 percent higher than September
* October marks the third time in the last four months Ford sales have increased
* October retail share was up for the 12th time in 13 months
* All-new Taurus accelerates in October; Ford dealers report Taurus retail sales nearly tripled year-ago levels
* Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars and crossovers post sales increases; overall car sales were up 11 percent versus a year ago, and crossovers were up 23 percent
* Ford’s new F-150 continues to achieve share gains, followed being named the coveted “Truck of Texas” by the Texas Auto Writer’s Association

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 3, 2009 – Ford, Lincoln and Mercury October U.S. sales totaled 132,483, up 3 percent versus a year ago and 21 percent higher than September. This marks the third time in the last four months Ford sales have increased.

“Consumer demand for our new high-quality, fuel-efficient products is driving Ford’s market share gains,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing Sales and Service. “Ford vehicles are among the ‘freshest’ available by any automaker – with more than 80 percent of our sales in October coming from our new 2010 models.”

Ford estimates its total market share in October was more than 15 percent – higher than a year ago and higher than its share in the first nine months of 2009. Ford’s October retail share was up for the 12th time in 13 months.

“The Ford plan is working, led by the strength of our product lineup and customer demand for our new cars, utilities and trucks,” said Czubay. “Consumers increasingly are noticing that the Ford difference is our great products, our strong business and our leadership in quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart technologies and value.”

October Sales Highlights

* All-new Ford Taurus sales totaled 6,076, up 141 percent versus a year ago. Dealers reported retail sales nearly tripled year-ago levels.
* Other new Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars posting increases included the Ford Fusion (up 24 percent), Ford Mustang (up 2 percent) and Lincoln MKZ (up 27 percent).
* Crossover utilities posted strong sales increases: Ford Escape was up 26 percent; Ford Edge up 38 percent; Ford Flex up 8 percent; Mercury Mariner up 36 percent; Lincoln MKX up 15 percent. In addition, sales of the all-new Lincoln MKT crossover were up 36 percent from September.
* Ford’s F-Series truck achieved sales of 39,496 and a year-to-year share increase in the full-size pickup category. In addition, the all-new Ford F-150 SVT Raptor captured the coveted “Truck of Texas” award from the Texas Auto Writer’s Association. Ford’s F-Series has been the No. 1-selling truck in America for 32 years straight.
* Ford’s new EcoBoost engine technology is winning customers, too. In October, sales of EcoBoost-equipped models were twice as high as September. EcoBoost provides customers up to 20 percent improvement in fuel economy and a 15 percent reduction in emissions versus larger-displacement engines. EcoBoost is standard on the Taurus SHO and available on the Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS and Lincoln MKT.

Lovely . . . the new Taurus seem to be taking off nicely and so is the MKT. And what about that current-MKX swan song?

Things seem to be working as planned. Its only tuesday noon and we can already say that this was a great week for Ford.

Sales of the MKT in September were 450.

If there's a "swan" flapping it's wings at Lincoln it's the MKS. Off 22% already.

Re: October 2009 Ford Sales: Up 3%

Wonder how this looks compared to sales 2 years ago.

As we all know this time last year, sales were very weak for all automakers so being up from this time last year really doesn't mean much to Ford or any other automaker.

619 in October, 1074 YTD...

Lincoln sold a grand total of 6,700 cars in October. Geez thats almost as many as Chevy sold Camaros. Even Mercury sold as many as Lincoln.

The MKZ is up 26.9% I see nothing wrong in that. The MKS is down 22.3% which represents a recovery in relation to previous months (-27.5%) AND a numeric gain of over 300 units in relation to September. The Navigator is dead as far as Ford is concerned, it will be kept in life support for its followers and because is cheaper than killing it.

Lincoln's overall sales slump was -9% which is not too bad considering what the economy in general and the industry in particular are going through.

For the year the MKZ is down considerably, is what I was saying.

And your MKS dance is interesting. You're using the fact that it's less down than it was last month as a good thing? It's a launch product and it's already in double digit decline over its intro year.

I don't know what good there is to find in that.

you forget Where Lincoln WAS 4 years ago!!

And comparing luxury to main market cars .. tsk tsk ..

I will wait for the others' results to celebrate/respond. The one thing in this market that actually matters is share .. is Ford doing better than its rivals?
Yes? awesome! woo hoo!!
No? Oh well then the 3% is meaningless.

The real winner here is Volvo...look at those numbers with no main-line S60 for sale!

Re: October 2009 Ford Sales: Up 3%

Didn't GM tear a hole in Fords sales August-Oct last year with the employee discount program? In other words are these sales gains we've been seeing for Ford real, i.e. is last years Ford sales number artifically low making Ford look much better year over year?

Not to take away from the good product they are putting out, but are these numbers telling us a misleading story? I will admit that I am going off of memery, I could be wrong.

Not sure how GM did last year, but yes - FoMoCo sales last year were the ones hanging on for their dear life as the bottom fell out!

I think the entire industry started to collapse around August/September and began to bottom out by October/November. These sales gain don't seem to mean much when the industry was down 20% or so this time last year.

Hi,

In previous weeks, and probably later today again, I have pointed out to the fact that when the Mustang was launched in 2004, Ford was selling at least twice as many Mustangs as GM is selling Camaros today and rightfully so, after all de rigueur insults, the Camaro fans responds signaling that the economy is down the drain.

Being that your dear Cadillac megeebee up to the end of September had suffered a slump of -43.6%, forgive my life if I think that Lincoln's -26.9% is not all that bad considering. Also, both of you, be gracious and show me some clemency if I am happy that Ford posted yet again another sales gain this month (what like the 4th out of the last 5?) and if I feel somehow relieved that my favorite American car company announced yesterday a profit of almost $1 billion for the 3rd quarter of 2009.

I am weak and really can't help to see these facts and positive signs. I know you know better and they are really signs of impeding doom, but I just can't see them that way.

My apologies . . . (too bad there is not a mid finger salute smiley, but I am sure you can picture one here . . . )

Ya, and I thought that Lincoln was supposed to be the "volume" brand for the LM franchise by now.
