May Sales: Toyota up 12%, Nissan Falls 11%

http://yahoo.reuters.com/stocks/quot...-30-05_WEN8771

Thu Jun 1, 2006 1:30 PM ET
DETROIT, June 1 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday posted a 12.3 percent sales increase for May as sales of its passenger cars got a boost from increasing consumer concern over fuel economy.

May represented a single-month record for Toyota's U.S. sales at 235,708 vehicles, the company said. For the first five months of the year, Toyota sales grew almost 9 percent as the Japanese car maker took share from rivals.

Toyota-branded passenger cars rose almost 20 percent in May, including a record sales month for Toyota's Corolla sedan.

Nissan posts 11 pct drop in U.S. sales for May

Thu Jun 1, 2006 1:22 PM ET
DETROIT, June 1 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co.'s (7201.T: Quote, Profile, Research) U.S. operating arm on Thursday posted a May sales decline of 11 percent after adjusting for the number of selling days in the month.

The automaker said sales of its Nissan-branded vehicles were down 10.5 percent to 76,881 units, while sales for its luxury Infiniti brand were down 15.2 percent to 9,786 units.

Nissan said in April that it would shut down production at its U.S. plants over six days between April and early July in order to reduce an overhang of unsold vehicles.

Re: May Sales: Toyota up 12%, Nissan Falls 11%

Hard to believe people are buying the new line of ugly and bland Toyotas that seldom if ever get there advertised mileage! There are so many other choices out there, why is everybody choosing Toyota? An Altima is so much more fun to drive than a silly Camry. The Lucerne has many advantages over the Avalon, including apparently better quality control and better crash test results too! The Corolla is outdated, even if it is rated at 40 mpg highway which I don't believe for a second unless you drive super slow. There trucks are girly machines and most real truck drivers choose a superior Silverado/Ram or F-150 over theres. The Highlander and there other bigger sport ute are old. Scions are dustbins with lawnmower engines! The ladybug/slug like Yaris is getting very lukewarm reviews from what I have seen. Honestly I just don't see why Toyota is doing so good.

not to say this isn't a bad month for nissan... but every single 4-door car they sell between 10 and 35k is getting new versions out in the next 12 months. don't count them out yet...

Re: May Sales: Toyota up 12%, Nissan Falls 11%

American's lost their love for GM products 20 years ago and Toyota was ready with a (then) high tech fun to drive family car in the Camry...remember the "O what a feeling" adds of the guy driving the 24 valve V6 camry. Now here we are 20 years later and GM has finally fully embraced DOHC technology and will offer two similar midsize sedands (G6 and Aura) with a fully competitive package that isn't wrapped in boy racer ground effects like the General's first attempt at DOHC sedans from Pontiac and Chevy (GP and Lumina Z34 ring any bellls?). The Aura and G6 with the 3.6L are really the first time that GM has shown the world that they will follow Toyota from the 80's in producing midsize fun to drive cars with technologically rich powertrains.

It is no wonder that Toyota sells so many **************** cars. They got America hooked on the Camry (which is now an overgrown marshmallow handling car that I wouldn't be caught dead in). What the buying public doesn't realize is that the very thing that won them over to Toyota is now back in the American dealers court.

While Toyota continues its love fest with the American buyer - they are slowly falling victim to the very thing that killed Oldsmobile, Plymouth and that almost killed Buick and Lincoln - old age. The demographics are showing that slowly the Camry is becoming an old persons car like Buick used to be (and still is to a certain extent). This is where GM needs to attack. Start selling high tech well made vehicles in every segment and win over the current generation that wouldn't be caught dead driving a car like their "old foggy dad" who is now 50 and on his third Camry.

The Aura could do wonders for GM - I just hope that it has a flawless launch.

True. The new Altima looks killer. It has the one thing that GM has refused to offer on the 3.6L Aura and G6 - a slick shifting six speed manual sitting in a nice high quality interior.

It makes no sense, I would of thought Nissan would make a sales gain instead of Toyota!

DOCH powerplants aren't what provided the Camry its selling point. That's quality. People who buy Camry's wouldn't know the difference between Wankle, a pushrod, or a DOCH. The stick could poteintally be a bigger issue, but seeing as how only 3-5% cars today are made with sticks most people won't notice.

Re: May Sales: Toyota up 12%, Nissan Falls 11%

While I do not think of Toyota as that bad, I certainly wouldn't want any of their new cars. I think the cars that have been redesigned in the last year are extremely ugly: Camry, rav4, yaris...It shouldn't take too long before people wake up and realize that Toyota is not that great. I don't see how people associate GM with horrible fuel economy and Toyota with great fuel economy. The V6 epsilons get similar mileage to the Camry 4-banger. However, the Cobalt and Aveo can't touch the Corolla or Yaris. But GMs trucks get the best gas mileage compared to any other company. Opinions will eventually change, but it will take time.
